  • 2. EX8216 Switch HardwareEX8216 Ethernet Switches provide:1. High Performance2. Scalable Connectivity3. Carrier-Class Reliability. The EX8216 switch is a half-rack, midplanearchitecture, modular Ethernet switch that isdesigned for ultra high-density environmentssuch as campus aggregation, data center, orhigh performance core switching environments.

Count…EX8216 switches provide high-availability andredundancy for all major hardware components,including Routing Engine (RE) modules, SwitchFabric (SF) modules, fan trays (with redundantfans), and load-sharing 2000 W AC, 3000 W AC,and 3000 W DC power supplies. We can form an EX8200 Virtual Chassis byconnecting individual EX8200 switches to anXRE200 External Routing Engine.

Count…A Virtual Chassis is multiple switchesconnected together that operate as a singlenetwork entity. We can manage EX8216 switches using thesame interfaces that you use for managing otherdevices running the same operating system—thecommand-line interface (CLI), the J-Webgraphical interface, and the Network andSecurity Manager (NSM).

SoftwareThe Juniper Networks EX Series EthernetSwitches run Junos OS, which provides Layer 2and Layer 3 switching, routing, and securityservices. The same Junos OS code base that runs onEX Series switches also runs on all JuniperNetworks J Series, M Series, MX Series, andT Series routers and SRX Series devices.
  • 7. Chassis Physical Specifications,LCD Panel, and MidplaneEX8216 switches are designed to optimize rackspace and cabling. The EX8216 switch is 21rack units (21 U) in size (1/2 rack). Two EX8216switches can fit in a standard 42 U rack.

Count…The EX8216 switch has a chassis-level LCD panel that displaysRouting Engine and switch fabric status as well as chassiscomponents’ alarm information for rapid problem identification.The LCD panel provides a user-friendly interface for performinginitial switch configuration, rolling back a configuration, orrestoring the switch to the factory default configuration. The EX8216 chassis midplane distributes thedata, control, and management signals to system componentsand distributes power throughout the system.
  • 9. Routing EnginesSystem management and system control functions ofan EX8216 switch are performed by the RoutingEngine (RE) module. An RE module contains aRouting Engine. The RE modules are hot-insertableand hot-removable field-replaceable units (FRUs)that are installed in the front of the chassis in theslots labeled RE0 and RE1. A base configuration (AC version) EX8216 switchhas one RE module. A redundant configuration (ACand DC versions) EX8216 switch has a second REmodule for redundancy.
  • 10. Switch FabricThe Switch Fabric (SF) modules provide theswitching functionality to an EX8216 switch. The SFmodules are hot-insertable and hot-removable FRUs.All eight SF modules are installed in the rear of thechassis in the slots labeled SF7 through SF0. In anEX8216 switch, all eight SF modules are active andmust be installed in the switch for normal operation. If a single SF module fails, the input/output trafficfor that module is load-balanced among theremaining SF modules, providing gracefuldegradation in midplane performance.
  • 11. Count…The impact of an SF module failure on theperformance of an EX8216 switch varies based onthe type of line cards installed in the switch and thetraffic mix flowing through them. In an EX8216 switchconfiguration that is fully loaded with 8-port 10-Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ line cards, if one SF modulefails, the remaining seven SF modules still havesufficient switching capacity to maintain continuousswitch operation at full wire-rate performance. The EX8216 switch can also be connected to anXRE200 External Routing Engine. An XRE200External Routing Engine is used to connect multipleEX8200 switches into a Virtual Chassis.

Line CardsThe EX8216 switch features 16 horizontal linecard slots and supports wire-rate performancefor all packet sizes for the installed line cards.The line cards in EX8200 switches combine aPacket Forwarding Engine and Ethernetinterfaces on a single assembly. They are FRUs,and you can install them in the slots labeled 0through 15 on the front of the switch chassis. Allline cards are hot-insertable and hot-removable.

  • 14. Cooling SystemThe cooling system in an EX8216 switchconsists of two hot-insertable and hot-removableFRU fan trays. Each fan tray contains nine fans.Both fan trays install vertically on the left front ofthe chassis and provide side-to-side chassiscooling and front-to-side cooling. The top and bottom fan trays are identical andinterchangeable. However, only the top fan traycools the SF modules installed in the rear of thechassis.
  • 15. Power SuppliesPower supplies for the EX8216 switch are fully redundant,load-sharing, and hot-insertable and hot-removableFRUs. Each EX8216 switch chassis can hold up to six ACor DC power supplies. The redundant AC configurationships with six AC power supplies to provide the capacityto power the system using N+1 or N+N powerredundancy.The redundant DC configuration ships with four DC powersupplies. The dual inputs of the DC supplies providedirect support for N+N power redundancy. The redundantconfiguration also provides sufficient capacity for N+1redundancy in most configurations; if necessary, up to twoadditional DC supplies can be added to the system.
