Maui and the Big Fish

  1. 1. Maui and the Big Fish Retold by Room 2
  2. 2. Maui’s brothers went fishing without him.
  3. 3. Maui was hiding in the waka. Then he jumped out of his hiding place!
  4. 4. Maui’s brothers didn’t catch any fish!
  5. 5. Maui said “can I have a turn?” His brothers said “ok then. Then we are going home”. Maui tied his grandmother’s jawbone to the line, and threw it in. He caught a big fish…
  6. 6. Maui said “don’t cut up the fish! You have to make a karakia to the god of the ocean, Tangaroa, first.” The brothers didn’t listen to the words that Maui said. The gashes the brothers made formed valleys, and other parts swelled to make mountains.
  7. 7. So if you look at a map of New Zealand today, the North Island looks like a fish, and the South Island looks like the waka. Te Ika a Maui and Te Waka o Maui.
