  • 21. Research ResearchConcealed hinges Available in five different finishes. Hinges made for 1/2" partial inset doors on a face frame cabinet. Partial inset doors have a cutout (rabbet) on the edge of the door. The cutout measures 3/8" in "lip" direction and 1/2" in the "inset" direction. None Self-Closing means that the hinge does not have any spring action. This type of cabinet hinge requires a cabinet catch to keep the door in the closed position. Also known as a free swinging hinge. Concealed Cabinet Hinge 165° 35mm Product Specifications Size: 3/4-Inch Color: Plain Steel Technical Details Ideal for use on kitchen cabinet doors Attaches to inside of door and adjacent interior cabinet wall Self-closing Easy to install Screws included Mortise hinge Simple mortise hinge can be used for general purpose cabinet work. • 22. RESEARCH: DRAWER CONSTRUCTION WITH MANUFACTURED BOARD. Handle fixed to the front drawer panel for pulling facility. Front drawer panel from laminated mdf for enhanced appearance and appeal. Plastic lipping used for better edging effect and contribute positively to appeal. Used to smooth edge as well. Backing panel on which the front panel is fixed from inside for screw holes not to appear. Screw used for fixing panels together which form a butt joint. Edge to edge joint Front panel side from laminated mdf board and lipping Countersunk screws 20mm being used to fix the back panel to the front one As for the handle, it is fixed to the panels with the aid of machine screws having flat head which is supported against the board. Groove made for supporting base. Use of rowter to make groove. Plywood with mica lamination used as base and inserted in the groove. Groove technique is one way of joining the base to the drawer panels is by using panel pins. Use of panel pins to fix base to the drawer frames. Countersunk screws have been used to fix the two panels together by butt joint technique; edge to edge. Edge to edge joint; butt joint used Side panels of drawer Wooden handles have been used for easy pulling of drawer. It has been fixed just like the above drawer; that is using machine screws. Instead of plastic lipping, here wooden strips have been used as lipping. It has been fixed to the edge using glue and panel pins. It has a good overall aesthetic appeal. Countersunk screws used for fixing the rail to the side panels of the table Rails on which the drawer will slide. It has been fixed to the side frame of the table using screws. Research on solid wood lipping: Solid wood lipping: MDF can be used for most applications with directly moulded and finished edges without the need for adhesive bonded solid wood lippings which are normally required with moulded edge particleboard panels. The well compacted edges of MDF ensure good machining with well defined profiles which can be finished to a high quality level. Types of lipping: butt jointed lipping and tongued lipping are mostly used. Different types of lipping used on MDF board and other particle boards. Research on plastic lipping/ synthetic lipping To apply an iron on edging strip, pre-heat the edge of the board by rubbing over it with a domestic iron on its hottest setting. Cover the strip with a length of non printed paper, then firmly rub the iron along the edge until the strip sticks into place. Leave the adhesive to harden for about 20 minutes, and then trim off any excess strip at either end with a sharp knife. Shave away the edges of the strip using a edge trimmer so that they are flush with the sides of the board. Then sand edges.
  • 23. Development Development L-bracket with countersunk screws to fix the two parts instead of directly using screws which can avoid splitting Textured lipping placed on the edge of the board for greater appeal and to avoid board from being damaged. Design for ironing board (top) Rubber footing Rubber footing which has for role to protect the base from humidity which can affect the board (mopping floor) but also preserves the edge, prevents it from splitting while the rubber material avoids skidding, thus providing stability Side panels made from laminated textured blockboard 14mm thick which is strong, durable and available in large sheets. Top ironing board from mdf which is covered with padding. There is enough space for the storage unit for clothes to be kept under table. Board Another way of joining the side panels and the top together is by using modesty blocs. Rounded corner Evaluation: The design is simple and purports its function well. It provides enough surface area for ironing clothes and in addition to that the design is stable, has a strong structure and ergonomic. Overhang of top part so that user does not knock against storage unit too often. Dimensions: Telescopic rails Galvanised 3mm thick mild steel flat bar bent in shape for support. M.S is a very strong and load bearing material. Stainless steel handle Rounded edge for better appeal and safety Screws The handle is fixed to the front of drawer using screws. Drawer front Drawer for storage of items like: iron and spray Ironing board + Padding Base from 4mm plywood sheet Telescopic rails for drawer to open to greatest possible span. It is fixed to board with screws Instead of letting the shelves open, like in previous development stages, a cabinet door can be place so as to ensure that clothes are stored more safely; away from dust perhaps, or even from insects. It is somehow more appealing, the door.
  • 25. Evaluation of Model Folding ironing board User placing bar in position  The user lifts up the foldable ironing board and places it in a stable position.  He then positions the stay bar under the folding ironing board to keep it in a horizontal position.  Problem faced by user is that if too much force is applied on the folding part, it might collapse which might prove to be dangerous for user.  The user finds it comfortable to use the ironing table for it is at a reasonable height for him.  He irons the clothes while moving the iron to and fro and side to side onto the ironing board.  As seen in the second photograph, the user can user the maximum of the ironing board’s surface area.  It can be found that the surface area for the ironing table is appropriate for easy ironing of clothes. (large surface area) The user has also the necessary facility while making use of the iron tray holder; it is at the reach of the user’s hand, therefore he can very easily keep the iron while or after use on it.  The user as seen in the image is using the drawer in which he will probably store items.  He extends his hand a bit to reach the handle and pulls the drawer by means of its handle.  The drawer is pulled by user and it glides onto the rails while being opened.  User has easy access to the drawer.  The user draws the storage unit for unironed clothes by pulling the frame. The frame is conducted to the front by rails to which it is fixed.  The user has to bend to remove clothes from the storage unit.  Front picture of user using the storage unit for clothes.  Forward movement of hand to pull the sliding storage unit towards him. Bending position by user to place of remove clothes or items from the lower shelves. Hands are extended in such a way to reach these. The user has to maintain a more acute bending posture while dealing with the lowest shelves in the ironing table unit and his hands extend even more. Iron tray holderUser’s hand at reach of iron tray holder Bending position Lower shelf of unit User extending hands to reach shelf + bending position User ironing clothes on flat surface. Large surface area of ironing board User and straight position Slightly inclined position Drawer being pulled by user User pulling the storage unit out Client’s evaluation of Model Client 1: “The ironing table is appealing and serves well its purpose; it got a storage unit for ironed as well as unironed clothes. It, moreover, has space for keeping items like: iron or even water spray. He finds the ironing table stable; however, he does not like the folding ironing board which for him can collapse at any time, thus, hurting him.” Client 2: “Personally I like the design of the ironing table but I find that it would be better not to include the folding part. Furthermore, I find is tiring to bend and place clothes on the lowest shelf because I got back problems. On the whole, the ironing table purports its task.” Possible Improvements: However I have found certain areas for improvements:  The front leg of the ironing table is not quite stable.  The foldable part can collapse if the stay bar is moved, a potential source of danger indeed  The lower shelf problem as highlighted by client  The overall appeal of the design. Self Evaluation of Model: Well, I find that the ironing board functions well. The user can easily iron clothes but also keep them in storage areas. On the whole, I find the ironing board to be user friendly. It is a practical design for an ironing table. Nevertheless there are flaws in my model.

  • 40. POSSIBLE CIRCUITS DESIGN: Vs = +12V A1 = A2 = A3 = A4: ¼ LM339 D1 = D2 = D3 = D4: 1N4001 M1 = M2: 12V Motor In the schematic above, A1 and A2/ A3 and A4 form a window comparator which gets varying electrical values from the voltage divider made up of LDR 1 and LDR2/ LDR 3 and LDR 4. Pins 1, 2, 13, 14 are the outputs and can each go can high and low; these pines are connected to the four input pins of the L293D which will drive the motors accordingly. The outputs from the window comparators will also be connected via diodes to the enable pin of each channel; this enable the L293D to unlock each channel with the enable pins (pin 1 and pin 9). To unlock the channel the enable pins must receive a voltage of more than +5V. The whole circuit will be supplied through a voltage regulator to give this circuit a steady +12V DC; a power switch and indicator will be included. To make an Arduino microcontroller into an effective solar tracker, programming is of great importance, but designating which components will go to which pin of the Arduino must be solved first. The LDRs are connected in series with a 1KΩ resistor of a ¼W; a connection is made from the analog pins of the Arduino to a connection between the LDRs and their respective resistors. This forms a voltage divider and therefore the Arduino can read the varying resistance as the sun moves. The L293D will be connected the same way as in solution 1 but the enable pins and input pins are all connected to the digital pins of the Arduino. Enable 1 and Enable 2 would be connected to digital pins 12 and 13 respectively; pin 2 and pin 7 of the L293D will be connected to the Arduino’s digital pins 6 and 5, while pin 10 and pin 15 of the L293D will be connected to Arduino’s digital pins 10 and 11. The Arduino would be programmed to unlock the channels of the motor controller when it needs to send pulses to the inputs of the motor controller. The motors will move according to the values of the LDRs. Fig. 4, Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 shows the breadboard configuration of the circuit. SOLUTION1 SOLUTION 2:
  • 41. POSSIBLE CIRCUITS DESIGN: FIGURE 4: FIGURE 5: Colour Code Green: Sensor. Orange and Yellow: Motor Control. White: Enable. FIGURE 6: SOLUTION 3: This solution is exactly the same as solution two, it uses the Arduino and the LDRs are all place into the same voltage divider configuration to be read by the same analog pins of the Arduino. It is fully automated and can reset; programming will slightly modified to accommodate the additional component which is an Arduino Motor Shield. The Arduino Motor Shield is the motor controller in this solution and it comes with additional functions like brake and speed control. The Arduino Shield Motor allows better and accurate motor control and gets incorporated on top of the Arduino; therefore the Arduino and Arduino Motor Shield become one. Programming becomes slightly simpler since the motor controller is completely compatible with Arduino. No additional components are required in this circuit; it is completely digitalised.
