- About A Detroit native, Kari L. Brown received her B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, where she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics. Brown is the only African-American female Ph.D. student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Tech. Brown is a woman with a mission, a message, and a mantra. Her mission is advocacy, her message is the"3S Mentality", and her mantra is, “it’s all about caring for others.” The three add up to an ethic that both challenges and fulfills her. At age 26, Brown has traveled to Ghana, Sweden, Denmark, China, London, Ontario, Chile and Argentina.
