Article marketing has long been one of my favorite traffic generation strategies. I love to write, so it’s a free and pretty easy way to gain a lot more online exposure without having to rely so heavily on PPC ads. There are 2 main article marketing strategies that I have found to be the most effective. Let’s spend some time on each so you can get very clear on what it really takes to drive a lot of traffic through article marketing.
1. Keyword optimizing your article and adding it to ezinearticles.com ~ By far and away, ezinearticles.com is the preeminent article directory on the internet. Google ranks ezine articles well, so if you find a keyword that is not highly competitive, there’s a decent chance of getting your article on the first page of Google. If that keyword gets a decent amount of traffic, your article will get quite a bit of views and clicks through to your website.
I have used this strategy quite extensively; let me show you the results from my ezine articles account:
You can see here that my articles have been viewed 76,613 times. This is a lot of exposure, even if all of these people don’t click through to my websites. We can see that my articles have generated 8,892 unique visitors. If I was paying for Google Adwords, this would likely be over $10,000 in pay-per-click costs. In my experience, the quality of traffic coming from ezine articles is quite a bit higher than PPC traffic, so that’s an important factor to consider as well.
You can also see that I have 299 articles in my account, which is a ton. Since I now outsource article writing so I can focus on writing here on my blog, the click through ratio has decreased to 11.6%. It used to be a lot higher when I was the one writing all the articles.
Ezine articles gets a ton of traffic, so you’ll get views and clicks just from people coming to their directory. I have found that keyword targeting my articles to get well-placed in Google is really what matters the most in terms of traffic generation through ezine articles. The method I use to do this is relatively simple:
find a keyword that gets at least 500 monthly searches and has a competition of 300,000 or fewer competing web pages (finding keywords with 200 or so monthly searches and this level of competition is easier, but you’ll get less traffic).
make sure there isn’t an ezine article on the first page of Google already for that keyword
write your article so that the keyword is in the title, description, and article body (I prefer a keyword density of around 1%)
That’s it! Pretty simple, really. Now, not every article will get you 1,000 visitors to your site; some will be duds. You have to know that right from the start when it comes to article marketing. The key is to place these articles consistently over a long period of time. That’s where you’ll see the best results.
2. Use article directories to create back links to your website to improve your search engine optimization ~ In this article marketing strategy, the amount of traffic you get through the actual article directories is just icing on the cake. The main focus is on getting your website higher in the organic searches by getting a lot of back links to it for the keywords you want to rank for.
Let’s say you want to sell a yoga DVD that improves your rock climbing abilities. You have discovered that the most searched for and relevant keyword phrase is ‘yoga for rock climbing.’ What you would do is create a series of articles on this topic and submit them to hundreds of online article directories. By far the best way to do this is to use Unique Article Wizard , which will automatically distribute your articles through several hundred article directories. I have tested a number of article submitters and this is the best one without question. It’s the easiest to use and gets the best results.
In the resource box of your article, you would want to include the anchor text that links back to your website.

See how the hyperlink is the actual keyword you want to rank for? The more article directories that link back to your site, the better your chances of getting ranked high on Google for that keyword. How many back links you’ll need depends on how strong the competition is for your keywords. The fastest way to determine this is to get a free trial of Market Samurai , the main keyword tool I use to get all of the data I need to make SEO much more of a scientific process rather than one of guess work.
Market Samurai will tell you the exact number of back links you’ll need to beat your competition, along with how strong your on page SEO needs to be in order to own those coveted top spots. It’s a fantastic piece of software that will save you a ton of time and frustration trying to crack the code on dominating Google.
If you’re going to take advantage of these 2 article marketing strategies , my best piece of advice is to really GO for it! Don’t be too casual about it (like writing one article that you put on ezine articles, then come back a week later saying, ‘well that didn’t work.. now what?? )
Do the market research, make a spread sheet of the top keywords you want to rank for, then get Market Samurai and Unique Article Wizard to get a plan in place for generating back links so you know to a science how you’re going to get positioned at the top of Google. This is not only the best way to fully utilize these article marketing strategies ; it’s the only way that really works!
