  • The USS CARL VINSON arrived in theater on 15 January, 3 days after the earthquake. Medical crew members evaluated and treated 60 American and Haitian patients and performed 12 surgeries onboard. The VINSON was augmented with a partial Fleet Surgical Team composed of a second general surgeon, nurse anesthetist, surgical technician, and a critical care nurse. Surgeries included amputations, laparotomy, foreign body removal from the brain of a young girl performed by Dr. Sanjay Gupta (CNN Medical Correspondent), and wound incision and drainage. Two patients were medevaced onboard for acute renal failure from rhabdomyolysis secondary to crush injuries. Both of these patients died of cardiac arrest (elevated potassium suspected). Another noteworthy case was a mother whose infant was born onboard USS MOHAWK (USCG) and medevaced to the USS Carl Vinson when the neonate was only 3 hours old. The Vinson’s family practice physician cared for them. Mom decided to name the baby boy "Vinson" after the USS CARL VINSON. The USS CARL VINSON left theater on 30 January after approximately 2 weeks.
  • The USS BATAAN departed Norfolk, VA on 14 January 2010, just 48 hours after the Haiti earthquake and arrived in theater on 18 January 2010. There were a 17 member Fleet Surgical Team and an 87 member Casualty Receiving Treatment Ship (CRTS) medical augmentation that was sourced within 7 hours of being tasked from Navy Medicine Region West that reported onboard on 20 January. The USS BATAAN treated 95 Haitians before the CRTS debarked on 23 February 2010. There was one vaginal delivery onboard. The breakdown for surgeries is as follows:--- Major/Trauma Surgeries: 21--- Minor Surgeries: 77;--- 90% of all cases Ortho related: amputations, Ex-Fix, splinting/casting--- 10% general procedures, washouts/lacerations
