How did the conquistadors do it?<br />They had native allies<br />Though many Spanish accounts don’t mention them<br />The allies fought in Spanish conquests inside and outside of Mesoamerica<br />
Allies helped in many ways…<br />Gave gold and resources as gifts to establish peace<br />Provided food for the Spaniards<br />
Allies worked as…<br />Porters, or tamame, and carried bags<br />Spaniards didn’t bring many horses with them<br />Guides to help troops with the terrain<br />Interpreters to communicate with other tribes<br />
Other relationships with allies<br />The exchange of native women for marriage<br />Marriages contributed to alliances between households<br />Many natives were against the Triple Alliance and formed alliances among each other<br />
