      • Ballet was developed in the royal courts during the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century.
      It was designed as a dance interpretation of the popular sport of fencing
      Dress was formal, women’s gowns covered their ankle
      • Italian royal Catherine de’Medici introduced ballet to France
      Married Henry II of France when they were both 14
      Supported the arts financially
      • The Ballet Comique de la Reine was the first ballet performed in Paris, France in 1581 in Catherine de’Medici’s court.

      • Ballet was further developed by dance enthusiast King Louis XIV of France.
      Formalized vocabulary in French
      Founded the AcadémieRoyale de Dansein 1661
      • Pierre Beauchamp was Louis XIV’s dance instructor
      Codified the fivepositions of hands and feet.
      • Louis XIV founded the Académied'Opérain Paris
      Ballet was not performed independent of opera yet.
      • Jean-Georges Noverre developed ballet d'action
