  • 2. Kiwi Tamaki-The history of Maungakiekie
    • Kiwi Tamaki was the name of the great Māori warrior chief of Te Waiohua tribe of Waikato.
    • They lived and built their Pā and village on the mountain known as Maungakiekie – One tree hill.
    • Only just above the Onehunga Primary School and Onehunga High School plus the Royal Oak Primary and the whare WānangaTakiura on Pah road.
  • 3. It had one of the best Pa’s
    • He and his warriors drove all before them, Ngati Maru and Ngati Paoa of the Hauraki plains.Kawerau-a-Maki to the West and Ngapuhi to the north.
    • His leadership skills were unquestionable and his battle field prowess were admired by his enemies.
    • He ordered a Pā to be built and design it like a fortress with wooden palisades and trenches 3 deep with only one waharoa – entrance , so the attacking forces can only get in one at a time.
  • 4. The mountain’s history
    • A decade went by and still the enemy could not breach its defences so they met and thought that the only way to beat Kiwi Tamaki was to lure him out into the open.
    • So they set out a plan and with some persuasion he stepped out of his comfort zone and revenge was sought by his enemies.
    • The mountain was regained by Ngatiwhatua the victors, until today where there is a Treaty of Waitangi claim lodged to the Waitangi tribunal.

  • 5. Room 10’s enviro project integrated with Art and a Maori perspective
    • In 2008, students from Room 10 stained the board for our mural.
    • They took turns and enjoyed the activity
    • The plan was to create a mural on our Pepeha
  • 6. It all started with learning about our school environment and finding out about our mountain
    • In 2009,term 1 we were learning about our environment.
    • The students researched about One Tree Hill- Maungakiekie
    • Many students walked up Maungakiekie and made some observations. They shared the same with the class.
  • 7. The students practised drawing and painting the mountain on paper first
    • A lot of research was done on the internet for finding the right pictures, designs and colours.
    • Linni, an artist helped us from the beginning.
  • 8. The girls enjoyed themselves during the activity
    • Students enjoyed experimenting with paints and blending them.
    • It wasn’t easy standing on the slope and trying to paint.
  • 9. Learning about blending paints to get the right colour
    • Students mixed Resene paints in yogurt containers to get the right colour.
    • They worked in all kinds of weather.
  • 10. Artists at work
    • The children blended so many colours to get the right shade for the sun.
    • Margaret, a parent helped at every stage.
  • 11. Adding the detail to the painting
    • After the students did the basic outline, they added detail to our mural.
    • The trees, the road, the obelisk, the eagle etc were added on.
    • Lots of outlining had to be done.
  • 12. The detailed work
    • Everyone put in so much effort to get it right .

    • Lots of students helped painting the sheep, the runners, the stones, the wharenui
  • 14. The last detail
    • We were covering all the little gaps
