  • 1. WELCOMETOMODERNMARKETING Actionable Advice for a College Audience
  • 2. Each year we see dozens of articles for college grads featuring advice for entering the workforce. But it can be tough to figure out where to focus, who to trust, and what to do with all that advice.
  • 3. So we asked a group of marketing practitioners for their best pieces of advice for a college audience.
  • 4. Here's their advice.... ...and what to DO with it.
  • 5. Michael Idinopulos CMO|PeopleLinx "The marketer's job is actually to find the truth--to figure out what the company offers, to whom, and why. If you find the truth you don't have to spin. If you don't find the truth, the market will see right through you." TIP: Be authentic. Learn to meet customers needs in a genuine fashion.
  • 6. Jason Miller SeniorManager,ContentMarketing|LinkedIn "Learn to code. Understand how the web works to deliver content and some basic HTML/CSS." TIP: The more marketing goes digital, the more marketers must go digital. Expand upon your digital skillset.
  • 7. Jennifer Lashua Editorin Chief|IntelCorporation "The best marketers today are data geeks. Learn to love data! It's true marketing is an art and a science but the "art" part of it won't get you very far without a solid understanding of the science and analytics." TIP: Be able to measure the results of your marketing efforts, and learn from them. Knowing what to look for in data, and what to do as a result is a distinct advantage.
  • 8. Dean Langasco Content Marketer, Trainer and Speaker "Grow a natural interest in other people and what they care about. Record experiences, what you learn about people and life, what moves people, what moves you." TIP: Having a true understanding of what people care about will help you create content that moves, inspires, informs and motivates
  • 9. Doug Kessler Co=Founder | Velocity Partners Ltd The great thing about digital marketing and content marketing is that everyone is on the learning curve together. Being a recent graduate doesn't put you at a massive disadvantage -- especially if you like learning." TIP: Be able to measure the results of your marketing efforts, and learn from them. Knowing what to look for in data, and what to do as a result is a distinct advantage.
  • 10. David Godsall Editorial Manager | Hootsuite Media "I'd emphasize learning how to learn. We don't know what trends—cultural or technological—will buffet our business in the coming years, let alone what the next generation will face. What we do know is that it will take a combination of agility and humility to adapt to them." TIP: Don't fear change. Embrace its inevitability. Be an adaptive person who can develop a progressive skillset.
