St. Gianna Health Academy Professional Portfolio

 1. 1. St. Gianna Health Academy Electronic Portfolio Kailee Jones
 2. 2. Orientation Week

The first week of the Health Academy, we took a tour of St. Francis and St. Joseph hospitals. We also listened to a speaker talk about the Via Christi. We learned about the security, where to park, and the rules and guidelines regarding the Health Academy. We also went down the hall to take pictures for our badges so that we could sign in before our rotations and so that we would be recognized as students at the hospital. A medical terminology class at Newman was required so we went there and learned about the online class and received our books for the class.

 3. 3. Blog Week 3

On my third week i was at the SICU which is the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

My nurse was Amy and she was really cool. There wasn't much going on so we just talked a bunch. There was one interesting patient who kept trying to get out of the bed and walk around. He even took a few swings at the nurses. We had to sit and watch him for a while cause he was on suicide watch.

 4. 4. Blog Week 5

I was in the Laboratory at St. Joseph this week. The first day was very slow. We just sat at the front desk and read magazines and watched Billy the Exterminator. The nurses I was with were very nice and easy to get along with. The second day I got a tour around the lab by about 5 different doctors. I was amazed with all the different machines. I got to see a doctor cut and analyze a 78 year old's foreskin. It was pretty gross and wrinkly. =( I also got to see a dead fetus and a placenta. This was all in pathology. I enjoyed this but I am more of a personable person so I don't think lab would be for me because they don't see patients. Overall, it was very interesting.

 5. 5. Blog Week 6

This week I was in the NICU. I was pretty interesting. I got to hold a 1 lb. 5 oz. baby and it just put a smile on my face. It amazed me how little the babies are. They almost don't even look normal. There was one African American baby girl who was 24 weeks premature. She is doing really well. Her mother hasn't come in to see her yet. Her mom has had 9 kids and none of them live with her. They are all in foster care. She does cocaine and probably will not be able to keep her newest girl. It is sad but I believe everything happens for a reason.

 6. 6. Blog Week 8

I was in the OR this week. It was interesting. I got to see the Da Vinci robot and that was really cool. I saw a hysterectomy the first day and the first half of the second day. Then on the second part of the second day, I saw a man have hip replacement surgery. Overall it was very interesting.

 7. 7. Blog Week 10

This week is was in Labor and Delivery at St. Joseph's. I loved it! The first day I saw two deliveries and an epidural. The first delivery I was a Mexican lady and she only spoke Spanish which was interesting because they had to bring in a Spanish-speaking doctor because no one had a clue what she was saying. The second day I got to see a C-section. It was very interesting. The baby had a problem with breathing though so he had to go to the NICU. I loved this rotation. It was nothing I have ever seen before. Every time I saw the babies I got the goose bumps. It really is a beautiful thing.

 22. 22. Resume Cover Letter Dear Ms. Clarke, I am contacting you to apply for an entry position in anesthesiology. Also to share with you my experiences, skills, and things that interests me pertaining to this field. Respiratory care interests me because it is strictly one thing. You are given a fixed schedule and do not have to be on call. You can move around the hospital and meet different people; also you don’t get bored staying in the same area. I think that I am the best for this position, because I think I have all of the qualities required for the position such as hard work, determination, perseverance, and respect. I play the harp so hard work, self proficiency, and determination are skills that I have developed over the years. I also have perseverance because I’ve had to overcome a lot of adversity in my life and I never give up. For example, my mom had breast cancer and it frightened out family to death. I thought she was going to die. She is cancer free but it took so much perseverance and hope to get through it. I show respect to everyone. My experience in anesthesia started was when I was really young. My dad is an anesthesiologist and I have learned a lot about in from him. It makes me want to pursue this career because I can follow in my dad’s footsteps and I will have an opportunity to help others. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to consider me as a candidate for the position. I look forward to meeting with you for a personal interview. Sincerely, Kailee Jones Kailee Jones October 7, 2010 Ms. Denise Clarke Program Director St. Gianna Catholic Health Academy 929 N. St. Francis 67214 (316)573-3226 , kjones848@gmail.com 4 N. Sandalwood

 24. 24. Respiratory Therapy

We went to Newman University to listen to a talk about respiratory therapy. Respiratory therapists evaluate and treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people whose lungs are diseased. They provide temporary relief to patients with chronic asthma or emphysema and give emergency care to patients who are victims of a heart attack, stroke, drowning, or shock. An associate degree is required to become a respiratory therapist. Among the areas of study in respiratory therapy programs are human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, chemistry, physics, microbiology, pharmacology, and mathematics. Therapists should be sensitive to a patient's physical and psychological needs. Respiratory care practitioners must pay attention to detail, follow instructions, and work as part of a team.

We were able to participate in what was going on. We got to stick a tube down a fake human’s and baby’s throat to help them breathe. We were also able to take blood from a fake arm. I was not done either of these and it was a memorable experience. I enjoyed that because we were actually involved in what she was teaching up about. Overall, I was satisfied with everything we learned and were able to participate in.
