English for Science & Tech Presentation 2008/2009 Cordyceps Sinensis Subject : English for Science & Technology Lecturer : MR. TAUFIK BIN RASHID Set 12
Cordyceps is a rare and exotic medicinal fungus.(medicinal mushroom)
Use by the Chinese practitioner for centuries ago.
People from the west have only come to know of Cordyceps within the last 20 years as the modern scientific research is applied to investigate one of the of most valuable treasure in the Chinese medicine.
NAME AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
“ Cordyceps ” come from the latin word “cord“ and “ceps” meaning “club” and “head”.
Normally, the term cordyceps refer to the the species of C. sinensis.
The Growth of Cordyceps Sinesis
The fruit body of the C. sinensis mushroom originates at its base on an insect larval host.
It ends at the club-like cap, including the stipe and stoma.
The fungus with an annual appearance make it only available during its harvesting period between April and August.
While not usually considered edible, because of its small size and rarity and tough texture.
However, it is been consumed traditionally as medicine with a variety of meats in form of medicinal soup.
The type of meat used dependent upon the target medical condition
OTHER NUTRITIONAL COMPONENT OF CORDYCEPS
The cordyceps contains wide range of the essential amino acids, vitamin E and K, water-soluble B1, B2 and B12.
Also contain many complex polysaccharides, protein, sterols, nucleosides, and trace elements ( K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Pi, Se, Al, etc.)
Bioactive constituents such as Cordycepin and cordycepic acid, saccharides like cyclofurons, beta-glucans, and beta-mannans.
Nucleosides ; uridine, deoxyuridine, adenosine, hydroxyethyladenosine, guanidine, etc.

Gives energy and offsets symptoms of altitude sickness.
An increase in energy level(cellular ATP) will cause an increase in oxygen availability .
Improve energy factories : mitochondrial energy
Shows significant clinical improvement in areas of fatigue, cold intolerance, dizziness, frequent nocturia, tinnitus, hypo sexuality, amnesia for those who has taken cordyceps sinensis.
No significant clinical improvement for placebo group.
Provide immune stimulation .
Adjust the volume, increase immune system cells, number of organization, promote antibody, swallow up killer cells.
Strengthen body’s resistance to infections, viruses, bacteria and, such as colds and flues.
Enhance ability of anti-virus.
Some fungus produces cyclosporin to provide an immune suppressant valuable in organ transplanting surgery but it has high toxicity.
Strengthened kidneys by reducing toxic subtances.
Increase 17-hydroxy-corticosteroid and 17-ketosteroid levels in body.
Cure chronic renal failure.
Patients who having this disease suffer from hypertension, proteinuria and anemia.
3-5g/day of cordyceps sinensis significantly improve the kidney function and overall immune function.
Cordyceps affect the blood glucose metabolism system Hypoglycemic Effect
treat many respiratory illnesses, including asthma, COPD, and bronchitis
It protect the lungs and is believed has its ability to promote enhanced oxygen utilization efficacy
stabilize the heartbeat and correct heart arrhythmias
Cordyceps has been used traditionally for heart disease and stroke patients
enhances the efficient functioning of the liver
treat chronic hepatitis B and C
Cordyceps extract used in combination with several other medicinal mushroom extracts as an adjunct to lamivudine for treatment of hepatitis B
Administration of Cordyceps has been associated with cholesterol and triglyceride reduction and an increase in ratio of HDL to LDL cholesterol
Hypercholesterolemia is a clear indicator of metabolism dysfunction and an indicator of increased cardiovascular risk
Uses Against Male/Female Sexual Dysfunction
Cordyceps are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat male and female sexual Dysfunction, such as hypolibidinism and impotence
Human clinical trials shows effectiveness of Cordyceps in combatting sex-drive
REVIEWS & COMMENTS
Very few toxic side effects have been demonstrated with Cordyceps use, although a very small number of people may experience
Cordyceps has proven to be a nontoxic fungal substance with wide-ranging physical and chemical effects on the body.
Still relatively new to the modern science, Cordyceps remains, in many nations throughout the world, an unrecognized substance.
There are a few countries that do require a doctor’s prescription
Many governments require that vendors obtain a special license to distribute any product relating to human health.
USAGE OF CORDYCEPS IN MALAYSIA
In year 2007, more than 30% of Malaysian suffered from high blood pressure.
Research has shown that the risk of death caused by heart diseases and stroke is increasing for those who aged between 40 to 89 even their blood pressure are as low as 115/75.
Cordyceps sinesis’s Cordycepin optimizes the constriction and dilation of blood vessels
Cordyceps is a medicinal substance of long history and promising potential. Once so rare that only the emperor of China could afford to use it, modern biotechnology techniques have brought it within the reach of the common man.
The first cordyceps biotechnology company in Malaysia which has the technology of self-cultivate cordyceps within their own lab.
timo™ Cordyceps Using the advanced biotechnology, timo™ Cordyceps Stroma has been accredited by The Malaysia Book of Records as the first and only cordyceps stroma that is cultivated in a specially designed clean room environment in Malaysia
