    Groundwater Groundwater Presentation Transcript

    • Groundwater Water that soaks into the ground
    • Groundwater
    • Groundwater Permeable vs. Impermeable
    • Groundwater Permeable Permeable rock has pore spaces that are connected and water can pass through them.
    • Permeable
    • Groundwater Impermeable Impermeable rock has no pore spaces or the pores are not connected well enough for water to pass through them.
    • Groundwater Aquifer Zone of Saturation Water Table Permeable Rock Impermeable Rock
    • Artesian Wells Draw a diagram of an artesian well in your notebook. Label the necessary components of the well.
    • Springs Springs occur when the water table reaches a sloping surface. Hot springs occur when groundwater comes in contact with hot rock and is heated.
    • Hot Springs
    • Geysers Geysers occur when water is heated underground. This water expands and is forced above ground by the pressure.
    • Water = ~500 years old
    • Groundwater Water + Carbon Dioxide Gas = Carbonic Acid (weak) Carbonic acid easily dissolves limestone.
    • Caves are formed by dissolving limestone. Carbonic acid may also make deposits on the inside of caves.
    • Limestone ground (Florida and Kentucky) + Plenty of rain = Caves and Sinkholes
    • Sinkholes Sinkholes occur when underground rock dissolves near the surface of the Earth.
