Setting Standards on Day 1
I think it is important for the teacher to set a short
simple list of expectations at the very beginning of
every year.
Students should be involved in creating these
expectations, so that they better understand what is
being asked of them.
First, I have the students discuss what they think
should be expected of them as a student.
I show the students how each of their
contributions fall into one of the three following
categories.
I implement the following expectations (in French,
of course):
Be respectful.
Be responsible.
Be a good scholar.
I open each expectation up for clarification and
discussion, and then wait for approval from my
students.
This usually controls behavior problems from this
point forward.
