  • My Class Notes:
    Session 1: August 18th
___*Intro. To class and each other: Sheet—name; e-mail; placement; FI’s name & e-mail.
___ Where did you go to school? best/worst memory of school; why school SW???
___*Expectations for the class and the professor
    ___Flexibility re: schedule/syllabus; I may add/delete/substitute, etc.
___Review syllabus/assignments—disclaimer about assignment complaints!!! Also, page 21 CORRECTION!!!
    ___sw834 Password
___Purpose/Goal of class: Discuss interface of theory/practice. I will posit some questions that are intended to make you think, not to tell you WHAT to think!!!!! Not my intention to disillusion you in any way b/c I am very optimistic and passionate about school SW; HOWEVER, you will need to hit the ground running, and I believe that if I can give you a “heads up” as to the pitfalls you may encounter, you will be much better prepared.
___Case example/Practice question: I may ask for volunteers/assign on a weekly basis for presentation the next week.
___Think/Pair/Share: Use this time as it’s intended so that we can generate rich, meaningful dialogue.
    ___*Purpose of Education
    (Constable 1:1;pg.18)
    Big task:
In today’s world, schools not only supposed to “teach,” but to help families prepare their children for the future. We expect that students, upon graduation, will be able to fulfill his/her potential for personal growth AND to contribute to the well-being of others in some way. AND, we are the only country that attempts to educate every child EQUALLY!! E.g. Korea, China, etc. all “track” students based on perceived ability and skills.
Q: Is this another example of our denial and hypocrisy—talking the talk, but not walking the walk? Saying we value children & families, but our $ & policies not reflecting this value.
    ___Review of Am. School System
___Legal & Econ. Structure of Schools
    (S. Stuewe)
    Session 2: August 25th
From last week: Purpose of education
