2. Who/What is Rodiac?
• Zodiac literally:
• A band around the sky about 18°
wide, centered on the ecliptic, in which the
Sun, Moon, and planets move.
The band is divided into 12 signs of the
zodiac, each 30° long, that were named by the
ancient Greeks after the constellations that
used to occupy these positions

hearing Mageau's moaning, returned and shot
each victim twice more before driving off.

7. Riddle, Code, or just nonsense?
• On August 1, 1969, three letters prepared by the killer were
received at the Vallejo Times-Herald, the San Francisco Chronicle,
and theSan Francisco Examiner.
• One-third of a 408-symbol cryptogram which the killer claimed
contained his identity.
• The killer demanded they be printed on each paper's front page or
he would "cruse around all weekend killing lone people in the night
then move on to kill again, until I end up with a dozen people over
the weekend."

• Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard were picnicking at Lake
Berryessa on a small island connected by a sand spit to Twin
Oak Ridge.

hood with clip-on sunglasses over the eye-holes and a bib-
like device on his chest that had a white 3"x3" cross-circle
symbol on it.

11. Paul Stine
• Twenty-nine year old Paul Stine was a husband, student and
cabdriver until he picked up the Zodiac on the night of
October 11, 1969.
• The San Francisco Chronicle received a letter that began with
a familiar introduction. "This is the Zodiac speaking. I am the
murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington & Maple St.
last night. To prove this here is a blood stained piece of his
shirt."
12. More Letters
• On October 14, 1969, the Chronicle received another
letter from the Zodiac, this time containing a swatch
of Paul Stine's shirt tail as proof he was the killer;
• It also included a threat about killing schoolchildren
on a school bus. To do this, Zodiac wrote, "just shoot
out the front tire & then pick off the kiddies as they
come bouncing out."
13. More Letters
• On November 8, 1969, the Zodiac mailed a
card with another cryptogram consisting of
340 characters.
• The 340-character cipher has never been
decoded. Numerous possible "solutions" have
been suggested, but none can be claimed as
definitive.
14. More Letters
• On November 9, 1969, the Zodiac mailed a 7-
Pages letter in which he claimed that two
policemen stopped and actually spoke with
him three minutes after he shot Stine.

with any Zodiac-related crime and his fingerprints did not
match those left by the killer of taxi cab driver Paul Stine.
• In 1991, 22 years after the shootings, survivor Michael
Mageau identified Allen as the man who shot him, from a
photo lineup of 1968 driver's licenses.
