1. The Secret Hidden In Plain Sight
by justjillin | on February 14, 2013
Yesterday I was watching a Google Hangout done by one of
my mentors Niamh Arthur and another couple Alex and Erica
Udeanu talking about how they got started blogging online,
how they found success (because they all have experienced a
level of success that by normal MLM, internet or affiliate
marketing standards is remarkable, but by Empower Network
standards is entry level into the upper echelons of big money
makers). Watch the video, they have amazing stories.
There was a concept that they talk about, quite a way into
the conversation, about “the secret”
Because really we all want to know what the secret is. The secret that tells us
exactly how we go from where we are to where we want to be, whether
financially, spiritually or emotionally.
Here is the link to watch the video:

As they were talking I remembered the story of the great violinist, Joshua Bell, who played solo
in a Washington Subway station. This man is a world class Violinist, he has learned the secret to
creating spell binding music, people pay hundreds of dollars to listen to him play in a theater
setting.
Perhaps you have seen the email while it was making the rounds:
A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold
January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was
rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on
their way to work.
Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed
his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.
2. A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and
without stopping continued to walk.
A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his
watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried
but the kid stopped to look at the violinist.
Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time.
This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced
them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20
gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished
playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any
recognition.
No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the top musicians in the world. He
played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the
seats average $100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station
was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and
priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour:
Do we perceive beauty?
Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to
stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how
many other things are we missing?
This really happened. Joshua Bell was part of a marketing experiment to see if people could
conceive beauty in an unexpected place.
While Niamh and Erica and Alex were talking about the secret, two things were revealed, one is
that the biggest factor in finding success is that success is already inside you and two few will
ever stop to realize that the secret is hidden in plain sight.
The secret is there all along.
3. Joshua Bell playing his million dollar violin in an obscure setting, was still a world renowned
violinist even if he was playing in the subway. Where he was performing did not change either
his ability or his reputation. The only variable was the ability of those who heard to perceive his
skill and recognize the secret hidden in plain sight.
Aren’t we all a bit like those passing by great opportunities for success because they come
to us in unusual ways and for a small price tag?
You either happened on this blog post because you found it through a search engine or perhaps
you are signed up to receive emails from me, or perhaps you are someone I know through social
media. You have perhaps heard of Empower Network and formed some sort of opinion about it
and about how you may or may not benefit from it.
Would you be more likely to value it higher if it was more expensive to try it out? At just $25 a
month for a complete blogging platform, pretty much you just have to show up and follow the
eight core commitments to make money with it wouldn’t you like to discover the secret with in
