Editor's Notes
What is social media?
You’re taking part in social media! No surprise there!
To demonstrate the magnitude and significance of social media…here are a few stats…
That includes links, videos, wall posts, etc. 250 million photos shared each day
100 million active Twitter users
With all of these people online on these social networking sites, it’d be crazy for businesses and non-profits alike not to participate. They can potentially tap into millions of users who they can eventually turn into customers or supporters.
In the deluge of information, why would people choose to follow you? Be worth following! Facebook is a very personal place…it’s where your friends are and most people are selective of the pages that they choose to like and receive information from. Be respectful of your followers and give them useful and great content! But what’s great content? You don’t really know for sure. You need to experiment with this a lot to see what your followers are interested in and what they respond to.
Activity here. Analyze each update and tell me what works and what doesn’t.
Don’t post too much. Once a day or twice MAX.
Social media is all about relationship building. The great thing about social media is that people can now talk back to brands. You can’t do that with television, radio, or print ads. But today, anyone with an internet connection can create a blog or send out a tweet about their thoughts on a brand. Good or bad. Be sure to cultivate relationships with your followers. Respond to their messages, like their message. Talk WITH them, not AT them. It’s no longer a broadcast, it’s a conversation.
In the deluge of information, why would people choose to follow you? Twitter moves so fast, you need to be able to find a way to set yourself apart from the crowd.
Need to make tweets as catchy as possible because of the 140 character limit. Plus, you’re competing with so much noise.
Hashtags are a way of organizing and indexing tweets. They are a great way to reach a larger audience than just your followers as people often search hashtags to keep up with conversations happening around different topics. Hashtags increase your visibility and therefore of your tweets getting retweeted. When they do get retweeted, they also keep your tweet circulating in the Twitter index and make it more likely for even more people to see it. It’s a cycle…
Capitalize on differenthashtags especially when there are events going on. For example, August 18 was World Humanitarian Day and people were using the hashtag #WHD2012.
Again, for visibility
TWEET CONTEST
Write an engaging tweet about this news piece.

The three C’s of blogging
Make your content useful and unique. Like we saw earlier, there are over 180 million blogs out there right now. Why would anyone read yours over someone else? What’s something unique you can offer them? You have to make really compelling content and not just post for the sake of posting. What are some reasons you read the blogs you read? Giving them a chuckle, giving them a laugh. Helping them to know that they’re not the only person with a problem. Giving them a sense of community, a place for them to connect with other people. These are problems that you can be solving with your content. Your content needs to be useful in some way. Just putting content on a blog that doesn’t really mean anything, that doesn’t actually help someone in some way, it’s kind of empty, and as a result, most blogs that do that don’t really reach the heights that they could.
You need to give people a reason to go back to your site. If it’s not updated regularly. People will not return regularly. Like Ryan Gosling.
Helping people who come across your blog to feel like they’re being noticed, feel like they’re being heard, and giving them opportunities to meet other readers of your blog. It’s just such a vitally important thing. People don’t go online just to consume content any more. They’re actually going online to belong and we’re seeing this with the rise of Facebook and Twitter and social media. The popularity for many years now of forums and chat, and all this web stuff that we’re seeing, it’s all about community, it’s all about belonging.
Activity: brainstorm topics for you to blog about throughout the year.
Really need to stress the importance of this. You need to be really conscious and cautious of what you post on the Internet whether it’s on your own personal account or professionally, for the Jane Goodall Institute. These things just don’t go away. Be sure to proofread. BE sure that you’re posting on the right account. What happens on the internet, stays on the internet. If you send out something wrong, you can delete it but you can expect that someone already took a screen capture of it and is spreading it around somewhere on the internet. That’s what happened with the BBC with their Rihanna/Chris Brown comment. Very sexist and misogynistic. Tried to delete it but it was screencapped and went viral.
The importance of proofreading!
Everyone writes Justin. Very disrespectful and shows that you don’t care or don’t take the time to get to know their name or connect in a real, meaningful way.
