  • A blog is…
    • Short for “weblog”
    • “ A type of website where entries are made (such as in a diary), displayed in reverse chronological order”. (Wikipedia, 2006)
    • Increasingly popular mode of communication => large number of new words that emerge
  • Language and Blogs
    • Most new terms formed from the root blog
    • Blogger, to blog, blogosphere, blogorrhea, blogaholics, blook, blogroll, photoblog , etc.
    • Vlog : a video blog
  • Language and Blogs
    • BUT: not all!
    • Dooced : being fired form work because of something one wrote on one’s personal blog about the company / colleagues
    • To mothball : to stop posting regularly to the blog
    • Ping : notification when a blog has been updated
  • Romanian Blogosphere
    • “ robloggers”, “roblogfest”
    • Add Romanian definite article to English root ( blogul )
    • Add Romanian suffix to English root ( blog ăr , bloghist , blogheriţă )
    • Add Romanian plural form to english root ( bloguri )
  • WHY
    • Focus on the message, not the form
    • Speed with which these words surface
  • Conclusions
    • Keep up!
    • Virtually impossible to translate at the rate these words are born
    • Very challenging to adopt a unitary terminology connected to ICT
    • THANK YOU!
