  4. 4. A blog is… <ul><li>Short for “weblog” </li></ul><ul><li>“ A type of website where entries are made (such as in a diary), displayed in reverse chronological order”. (Wikipedia, 2006) </li></ul><ul><li>Increasingly popular mode of communication => large number of new words that emerge </li></ul>
  5. 5. Language and Blogs <ul><li>Most new terms formed from the root blog </li></ul><ul><li>Blogger, to blog, blogosphere, blogorrhea, blogaholics, blook, blogroll, photoblog , etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Vlog : a video blog </li></ul>

Language and Blogs <ul><li>BUT: not all! </li></ul><ul><li>Dooced : being fired form work because of something one wrote on one’s personal blog about the company / colleagues </li></ul><ul><li>To mothball : to stop posting regularly to the blog </li></ul><ul><li>Ping : notification when a blog has been updated </li></ul>

Romanian Blogosphere <ul><li>“ robloggers”, “roblogfest” </li></ul><ul><li>Add Romanian definite article to English root ( blogul ) </li></ul><ul><li>Add Romanian suffix to English root ( blog ăr , bloghist , blogheriţă ) </li></ul><ul><li>Add Romanian plural form to english root ( bloguri ) </li></ul>
  8. 8. WHY <ul><li>Focus on the message, not the form </li></ul><ul><li>Speed with which these words surface </li></ul>
  9. 9. Conclusions <ul><li>Keep up! </li></ul><ul><li>Virtually impossible to translate at the rate these words are born </li></ul><ul><li>Very challenging to adopt a unitary terminology connected to ICT </li></ul>
