LEGISLATIVE SUMMARY HB 3141 PASSED IN 2007  House Bill 3141 (now ORS* 329.496) requires that by the 2017-2018 school year every kindergarten through eighth grade public school student in Oregon participate in physical education for the entire school year. *ORS: The Oregon Revised Statutes are the codified laws of the State of Oregon.

CHIP OBESITY PREVENTION STRATEGY #5 Strategy:  “Build local support for implementation of the 2017 legislative PE Mandate” (ORS 329.496) Performance Measure:  “The overall health and academic contributions of physical education are recognized, valued and supported” (by community members and key decision makers)
  4. 4. LANE COUNTY CHIP STRATEGY #5 Target by July 2016:  All Lane County school districts are on track to meet minimum PE requirements by 2017 deadline Requirements:  Grades K-5 = 150 minutes per week  Grades 6-8 = 225 minutes per week
  5. 5. ASSESSMENT: WHERE ARE WE NOW? (STATE DATA)

MAJOR IMPLEMENTATION BARRIERS STATEWIDE  Lack of physical education facilities  School districts need additional facilities to increase the amount of class time available to students  ~ 300 new facilities needed statewide  Lack of funding for P.E. Teachers  Economic crisis has lead to many districts cutting PE programs and teachers
  7. 7. LOCAL CHALLENGES  We have not yet collected local data – assessment needed  We have SIXTEEN School Districts in Lane County!  We are a geographically large county  Other?
  8. 8. NEXT STEPS  Logic model + Workplan  CHIP Obesity Workgroup, Metrics Workgroup, Core Team, Steering Committee  Workplan components will include local:  Staff/partner training*  Assessment and problem description  Community Organizing  Advocacy
