  • There are many advantages to recording your own stories, songs or rhymes. They can be in child’s home language Familiar to the child eg “We’re going on a bear hunt” story/song with sound effects Be personalised with the children’s names eg “Kulvinder and Ruby ran after the Gingerbread man” In a familiar voice, thereby creating links between home and school when a parent or grandparent records the story

  • As well as CD’s and tapes which can be purchased there are karaoke websites. A search in Google for karaoke+children gave a number of results, including this from the BBC
  • The Listening Game can be found at the same website as the karaoke activity but clicking on the 18mth to 3 yrs tab
  • Children can explore recording their own voice or sounds using a variety of resources. They can begin by using what you already have in the setting e.g. tape recorders or sound recorder on the computer. Further resources can be purchased which will allow you to record sound both indoors and out. Although children may need adult support initially, they will soon become confident, competent “sound recorders” for an assortment of purposes.   • Digital photographs or children's drawings can be used in Talking photo books or frames. Commentary or sound effects can be simply added at the touch of a button.   • There are a number of resources which are traditionally used within SEN settings which could be useful for recording sounds and voices. Some record one short message, others can record a number of messages or phrases.
