  1. 1. HOW will you organise learning? 9 Extended hours as a component of the curriculum What does ‘extended hours’ mean in the context of the big picture? l As a component of the curriculum in the big picture, extended hours refers to a lengthening of the school day to offer more opportunities to learners, families and communities (often as part of the extended schools agenda). This encompasses everything from involving parents more systematically and creatively to broadening services to include youth work, health services and other multi—agency provision. l l What maximises the impact of extended hours on learning? We have found that: Other schools have found the following. 0 Lengthening the school day allows for greater learner support in terms of enrichment and catch-up activities, with a positive effect on learning and achievement. 0 Planned learning activities after school that include learners and their parents or carers increase both groups’ commitment to learning and the school. - Clubs for sport, dance and other competitive and cultural activities enhance learners’ sense of personal and community identity. 0 Breakfast clubs enable learners to be more awake, more focused and better prepared for learning. Do we make the most of extended hours? Do we make the most of the potential for using extended hours to have a positive impact on learning? Could we improve the effectiveness of this component of the curriculum? © Qualifications and Curriculum Authority
