    • JUDY FLORES THEMATIC UNIT Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literatureand the embodiment of scientific thinking. Doyle himself was not a good example of rationalpersonality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories havebeen translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television 2  
    • JUDY FLORES THEMATIC UNIT series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doylewas one of the most highly paid writers in the world.Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles AltamontDoyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both ofDoyles parents were Roman Catholics. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism andwas eventually institutionalized. Charles Altamont died in an asylum in 1893. In the same yearDoyle decided to finish permanently the adventures of his master detective. Because of financialproblems, Doyles mother kept a boarding house. Dr. Tsukasa Kobayashi has suspected in anarticle, that Doyles mother had a long affair with Bryan Charles Waller, a lodger and a studentof pathology, who had a deep impact to Conan Doyle.Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools. He studied at Edinburgh University and in 1884 hemarried Louise Hawkins. Doyle qualified as doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practicedmedicine as an eye specialist at Southsea near Porsmouth in Hampshire until 1891 when hebecame a full time writer.First story about Holmes, A STUDY IN SCARLET, was published in 1887 in Beeton ChristmasAnnual.. The novel was written in three weeks in 1886. It introducedthe detective and his associate and friend, Dr. Watson, and made famous Holmess address atMrs. Hudsons house, 221B Baker Street, London. Their major opponent was the malevolentMoriarty, the classic evil genius who was a kind of doppelgänger of Holmes. Also the beautifulopera singer Irene Adler caused much trouble to Holmes.The second Sherlock Holmes story, THE SIGN OF FOUR, was written for the LippincottsMagazine in 1890. The story collects a colorful group of people together, among them JonathanSmall who has a wooden leg and a dwarf from Tonga islands. In the Strand Magazine started toappear The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.In 1893 Doyle was so wearied of his famous detective that he devised his death in the FinalProblem (published in the Strand). In the story Holmes meets Moriarty at the fall of theReichenbach in Switzerland and disappears. Watson finds a letter from Homes, stating "I havealready explained to you, however, that my career had in any case reached its crisis, and that nopossible conclusion to it could be more congenial to me than this."In THE HOUND OF BASKERVILLES (1902) Doyle narrated an early case of the deaddetective. The murder weapon in the story is an animal.He was knighted ("Sir Arthur") in 1902 for his work in Boer War propaganda (particularly thepamphlet The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct) -- and, some said, because of thepublication of THE HOUND OF BASKERVILLES.Owing to public demand Doyle resurrected his popular hero in The Empty House (1903). 3

I rose to my feet, stared at him for some seconds inutter amazement, and then it appears that I must have fainted for the first and last time in mylife."In these later stories Holmes stops using cocaine. Sherlock Holmes short stories were collectedin five books. They first appeared in 1892 under the title THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCKHOLMES. The later were THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1894), THE RETURNOF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1904), HIS LAST BOW (1917), and THE CASEBOOK OFSHERLOCK HOLMES (1927).During the South African war (1899-1902) Doyle served for a few months as senior physician ata field hospital, and wrote THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA, in which he took the imperialisticview. In 1900 and 1906 he ran unsuccessfully for Parliament. Doyle was knighted in 1902.Fourteen months after his wife died, Conan Doyle married in 1907 his second wife, Jean Leckie.He dedicated himself in spiritualistic studies after the death of his son Kingsley from woundsincurred in World War I. An example of these is THE COMING OF FAIRIES, in which hesupported the existence of "little people" and spent more than a million dollars on their cause. Healso became president of several important spiritualist organizations.Conan Doyles other publications include plays, verse, memoirs, short stories, and severalhistorical novels and supernatural and speculative fiction. His stories of Professor GeorgeEdward Challenger in THE LOST WORLD and other adventures blended science fact withfantastic romance, and were very popular. The model for the professor was William Rutherford,Doyles teacher from Edinburgh. Doyles practice, and other experiences, seven months in theArctic as ships doctor on a whaler, and three on a steamer bound to the West Coast of Africa,provided material for his writings.Doyle died on July 7, 1930 from heart disease at his home, Windlesham, Sussex."My contention is that Sherlock Holmes is literature on a humble but not ignoble level, whereasthe mystery writers most in vogue now are not. The old stories are literature, not because of theconjuring tricks and the puzzles, not because of the lively melodrama, which they have incommon with many other detective stories, but the virtue of imagination and style. They arefairy-tales, as Conan Doyle intimated in his preface to his last collection, and they are among themost amusing of fairy-tales and not among the least distinguished." 4

My name is Helen Stoner, she began,and I live with my stepfather, Dr Grimesby Roylott, near a village in the country. His family wasonce very rich, but they had no money when my stepfather was born. So he studied to be adoctor, and went out to India. He met and married my mother there, when my sister Julia and Iwere very young. Our father was dead, you see. Your mother had some money, perhaps? askedSherlock Holmes. Oh yes, mother had a lot of money, so my stepfather wasnt poor anymore.Tell me more about him, Miss Stoner, said Holmes. 5

He had to go to prison because of that, and then we all came back to England. Mother diedin an accident eight years ago. So my stepfather got all her money, but if Julia or I marry, hemust pay us £250 every year.And now you live with him in the country, said Holmes. Yes, but he stays at home and neversees anybody, Mr Holmes! answered Helen Stoner. Hes more and more violent now, andsometimes has fights with the people from the village. Everybodys afraid of him now, and theyrun away when they see him. And theyre also afraid of his Indian wild animals which run freelyaround the garden. A friend sends them to him from India. And the animals are not the only wildthings in the garden; there are also gipsies. My stepfather likes these wild people, and they cancome and go where they like. Poor Julia and I had very unhappy lives. We had no servants. Theyalways left because they were afraid of my stepfather, and we had to do all the work in thehouse. Julia was only thirty when she died, and her hair was already grey, like my hair now.When did she die? asked Sherlock Holmes. She died two years ago, and thats why Im here.We never met anybody in the country, but sometimes we visited some of my family who livenear London. There Julia met a young man who asked to marry her. My stepfather agreed, butsoon after this she died. Miss Stoner put her hand over her eyes and cried for a minute. SherlockHolmes was listening with his eyes closed, but now he opened them and looked at Helen Stoner.Tell me everything about her death, he said. I can remember it all very well. It was a terribletime! she answered. Our three bedrooms are all downstairs. First there is my stepfathers room.Julias room is next to his, and my room is next to Julias. The rooms all have windows on thegarden side of the house, and doors which open into the corridor. One evening our stepfather wassmoking his strong Indian cigarettes in his room. Julia couldnt sleep because she couldsmell them in her room, so she came into my room to talk to me. Before she went back to bed,she said to me, "Helen, have you ever heard a whistle in the middle of the night?" I wassurprised. "No," I said. "Its strange," she said. "Sometimes I hear a whistle,but I dont know where it comes from. Why dont you hear it?" I laughed and said, "I sleep betterthan you do." So Julia went to her room, and locked the door after her. Why did you lock yourdoors? asked Sherlock Holmes.We were afraid of the wild animals, and the gipsies, she answered. Please go on, said Holmes.I couldnt sleep that night. It was a very stormy night, with a lot of wind and rain. Suddenly Iheard a womans scream. It was my sisters voice. I ran into the corridor, and just then I heard awhistle, and a minute later the sound of falling metal. I didnt know what it was. I ran to mysisters door. She opened it and fell to the ground. Her face was white and afraid, and she wascrying, "Help me, help me, Helen, Im ill, Im dying!" I put my arms around her, and she criedout in a terrible voice: "Helen! Oh my God, Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!" Shewanted to say more, but she couldnt. I called my stepfather, who tried to help her, but we coulddo nothing 6

But it was a very wild, stormy night. Perhaps I made a mistake. Thepolice couldnt understand why my sister died. Her door was locked and nobody could get intoher room. They didnt find any poison in her body. And what was "the speckled band"? Gypsieswear something like that round their necks. I think she died because she was so afraid, but I dontknow what she was afraid of. Perhaps it was the gypsies. What do you think, Mr. Holmes? 2 Holmes and Watson Visit the HouseHolmes went out for the morning, but he came back at lunch-time. We then went by train intothe country, and took a taxi to Dr Roylotts house. You see, said Holmes to me, our dangerousfriend Roylott needs the girls money, because he only has £750 a year from his dead wife. Ifound that out this morning. But the gipsies, the whistle, the band - they are more difficult tounderstand, but I think I have an answer. 7

Youre right,she said. I think it was a plan to move me into my sisters room. Yes, said Holmes. We wentinto Julias room, and Holmes looked at the windows carefully. Nobody could come in fromoutside, he said. Then he looked round the room. Why is that bell-rope there, just over the bed? My stepfather put it there two years ago. Its for calling a servant, but Julia and I never used itbecause Holmes thought for a minute. Hmm, he said. That is a difficult question. But please goon. That was two years ago, Helen Stoner said. I have been very lonely without my sister, but amonth ago a dear friend asked me to marry him. My stepfather has agreed, and so were going tomarry soon. But two days ago I had to move to my sisters old bedroom, because some men aremending my bedroom wall, and last night I heard that whistle again! I ran out of the houseimmediately and came to London to ask for your help. Please help me, Mr Holmes! I dont wantto die like Julia! We must move fast, said Holmes. If we go to your house today, can we look atthese rooms? But your stepfather must not know.Hes in London today, so he wont see you. Oh thank you, Mr Holmes, I feel better already.Please tell me! said Helen. She put her hand on Sherlock Holmess arm. I must find out morebefore I tell you, Miss Stoner. Now goodbye, and dont be afraid, replied Sherlock Holmes.We walked to the village, and Holmes said to me, Tonight will be dangerous, Watson. Roylott isa very violent man. But if I can help, Holmes, I shall come with you, I said. Thank you,Watson. Ill need your help. Did you see the bell-rope, and the air-vent? I knew about the air ventbefore we came. Of course there is a hole between the two rooms. That explains why Helenssister could smell Dr Roylotts cigarette. My dear Holmes! How clever of you! I cried. 8  
    • JUDY FLORES THEMATIC UNIT And did you see the bed? Its fixed to the floor. She cant move it. It must stay under the rope,which is near the air-vent. Holmes! I cried. I begin to understand! What a terrible crime!Yes, this doctor is a very clever man. But we can stop him, I think, Watson. 3 Death in the NightThat night we went back to the house. When we saw Helen Stoners light, Holmes and I got inquietly through the window. Then we waited silently in the middle bedroom in the dark. Wewaited for three hours and did not move. Suddenly we saw a light and heard a sound from DrRoylotts room. But nothing happened, and again we waited in the dark. Then there was anothersound, a very quiet sound . . . Immediately Holmes jumped up and hit the bell-rope hard. Canyou see it, Watson? he shouted. But I saw nothing. There was a quiet whistle. We both lookedup at the air-vent, and suddenly we heard a terrible cry in the next room. Then the house wassilent again. Immediately Holmes jumped up and hit the bell-rope hard. 9  
    • JUDY FLORES THEMATIC UNIT  Round his head was a strange, yellow speckled band. He was dead.What does it mean? I asked. My voice was shaking. Its finished, answered Holmes. Lets goand see. We went into Dr Roylotts room. The metal box was open. Roylott was sitting on achair, and his eyes were fixed on the air-vent. Round his head was a strange, yellow speckledband. He was dead. The band! The speckled band! said Holmes very quietly. The band movedand began to turn its head. Be careful, Watson! Its a snake, an Indian snake - and its poison can kill very quickly, Holmes cried. Roylott died immediately.We must put the snake back in its box. Very, very carefully, Holmes took the snake and threw itinto the metal box.But how did you know about the snake, Holmes? I asked. At first, Watson, I thought that it wasthe gipsies. But then I understood. I thought that perhaps something came through the air-vent,down the bell-rope and on to the bed. Then there was the milk - and of course, snakes drink milk.It was easy for the Doctor to get Indian animals. And because he was a doctor, he knew that thissnakes poison is difficult to find in a dead body. So every night he put the snake through the air-vent, and it went down the bell-rope on to the bed. Of course, nobody must see the snake, soevery night he whistled to call it back. The sound of metal falling was the door of the metal box,which was the snakes home. Perhaps the snake came through the air-vent many times before itkilled Julia. But in the end it killed her. And Helen, too, nearly died because of this snake. But tonight, when I hit the snake on the rope, it was angry and went back through the air-vent.And so it killed the Doctor. Im not sorry about that. Soon after this Helen Stoner married heryoung man and tried to forget the terrible deaths of her sister and stepfather. But she never reallyforgot the speckled band. 10

But when theSouth lost the war, and there was equality for black people, Uncle Elias left America.So in 1869 he came back to England and went to live in a large house in the country.He was a strange, unhappy man. He did not want any friends, John Openshaw went on, and heoften drank a lot. But he liked me, and when I was twelve, I moved to Uncle Eliass house. Hewas very kind to me. I could go anywhere in the house. But there was one small room at the topof the house which was always locked. Nobody could go into this room.One day Uncle Elias got a letter from Pondicherry in India. "I dont know anyone inPondicherry!" he said, but when he opened the envelope, five little orange pips fell on to hisplate. I began to laugh but stopped when I saw my uncles white face. "K.K.K.!" he cried. "Ohmy God, my God, theyve found me!" "What do you mean, uncle?" I asked. "Death!" he cried,and ran upstairs. I looked at the envelope, which had three Ks on the back. There was no letter.Who sent it? And why was my uncle so afraid? Uncle Elias went immediately to the secret roomand took out a box which also had three Ks on it. He burnt all the papers in the box, and said tome, "John, I know that Im going to die soon. My brother, your father, will have all my moneyand my house after my death, and you will have it all when he dies. I hope you can enjoy it, butif not, give it to your worst enemy. Im afraid that my money brings death with it.“‘I didnt understand what he meant, and nothing happened for a few weeks, so I did not feel soworried. But my uncle was very afraid. He stayed in his room most of the time, and drank morethan before. He always locked all the doors carefully. Then one night he drank very heavily andran wildly out of the house, and in the morning we found him dead in a river. The police said hekilled himself, but I knew he was afraid to die, so I didnt think that was true. Holmes stoppedthe young man for a minute. Tell me, he said. When did your uncle get the letter from India,and when did he die? The letter arrived on 10th March 1883, and he died seven weeks later,answered John Openshaw. Thank you. Please go on, said Holmes. While he was working for the K.K.K., he sent the pips tofrighten those three men. Two left the country, but one didnt, so the K.K.K. "finished businesswith him", or killed him. The K.K.K. always worked like that. Well, I hope they wont killyoung Openshaw, I said. 4 The Last DeathsBut they did. The next morning we read in the newspaper that John Openshaw was dead. Apoliceman found him in the river near Waterloo station. The police said it was an accident, but 29

    • JUDY FLORES THEMATIC UNIT  Adverbs: are traditionally defined as words that describe verbs. Adverbs answer any of the following questions about verbs how? when? where? why? Adverbs are words that modify • a verb (He drove slowly. — How did he drive?) • an adjective (He drove a very fast car. — How fast was his car?) • another adverb (She moved quite slowly down the aisle. — How slowly did she move?) As we will see, adverbs often tell when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens or happened. Adverbs frequently end in -ly; however, many words and phrases not ending in -ly serve an adverbial function and an -ly ending is not a guarantee that a word is an adverb. The words lovely, lonely, motherly, friendly, neighborly, for instance, are adjectives: That lovely woman lives in a friendly neighborhood. * Remember Adjectives describe or modifies nouns and adverbs describe or modifies verbsB.
