By Judge Richard Halloran
As a Wayne County Circuit Court Judge in
the Family Division, Judge Richard B.
Halloran managed the Personal Protection
Order (PPO) docket for five years. In this
role, he issued about 1,500 PPOs each
month. Judge Richard Halloran has also
overseen trials relating to the violation of
PPOs.
A PPO is a court-ordered document that
victims can obtain without having to use an
attorney. Anyone who has been harassed or
threatened, whether physically, sexually, or
emotionally, can get a PPO against a spouse,
boyfriend/girlfriend, or roommate. With the
PPO, the harasser is prohibited from
contacting or approaching the victim.
Filing for a PPO requires only an affidavit to
the court detailing the circumstances, with
the inclusion of as many details and dates of
instances as possible. Other pieces of
evidence, like medical records and
photographs, are helpful but not necessary.
The court will also need as much information
about the abuser as possible to help notify
all necessary parties of the order and keep
the victim safe.
