  • Using Lulu.com as the model. 1) A couple years ago, after doing much research of P-o-D publishers/services, I selected Lulu.com to publish the proceedings of a workshop the IAJ sponsored, Ver 1.0 2) Lulu offers the most comprehensive set of services, while having the most elegant set of software for manufacturing your book, for connecting it to Amazon and similar databases AND for handling fulfillment and accounting for orders and royalties. 3) And it is among the cheapest vendors in that you decide how much to spend on individual aspects of the service – cover design or page formatting or editing. Then the cost to you for the proofs is the manufacturing cost.

  • Commentary on Lulu.com site: I've found the easiest way to create a one-piece cover (avoiding all the maths) is to upload my book and go through the publish process as far as the cover wizard. At that point, when you choice the advanced one-piece cover option, you're given the dimensions in pixels that your cover has to be. This has taken account of the type of book you've made, the paper choice (which changes the spine width), the page count and everything else. I can then tootle off and create the cover according to these dimensions, then come back to the project and upload it. I've never had problems with the size of the cover, just occasionally with the alignment of the vertical text on the spine so that it's in the middle of the spine. But that's more to do with my own amateur understanding of InDesign than anything else. If you create a text box for your spine and make it in the dimensions (width) that the spine is going to be, and place its left hand edge where the spine is going to start (so many pixels from the edge of the cover) then you shouldn't have any difficulties. This is self-publishing, so you have to become familiar with a number of black arts, even though you just want to get your book between covers. ;-)
  • What is a PSD file (PSD Template)? " PSD files are generally a layered file that is proprietary to Adobe PhotoShop . However, this file format has become so popular over recent years, that many other graphic software programs (newer versions) have programmed their software to be compatible with this file format. Adobe PhotoShop is an expensive program, however, two programs that we know can open and edit PSD files which are less expensive and quite good are Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7+ and Ulead PhotoImpact 7+ .
