    • Driving Question: What are the differences and similarities of human and dog pregnancies?

    • Gestation is the period of how long a
    • pregnancy is. Puppies maybe born between
    • 58 and 68 days.
    • Diagnosis of Pregnancy: With dogs, you can’t
    • take a urine test. Instead, vets feel their stomach
    • to see if the dog is pregnant.
    • Physical changes: After the fifth week, she starts
    • to gain weight, even with large litters. If only 1 or
    • 2 pups are present, the mother will gain little
    • weight.

    • Behavioral changes: During pregnancy, the
    • dog may show strange behavior such as
    • being restless, being alone and rip things
    • in the house to build a nest.
    • Nutrition: Good nutrition is healthy for the
    • Mother and pups. During the first 4 weeks,
    • her nutrition needs to change. Eating puppy
    • food will help the puppies grow.

    • A human pregnancy is divided into three
    • trimesters for each three months. The
    • first trimester is from the last period up to
    • 13 th week, the second trimester is from the
    • 14 th up to the 27 th and the third trimester is
    • from the 28 th week up to the 40 th week.

    • There significant differences in human and dog pregnancies the fetus in a woman is in gestation for 39 weeks (273 days) and a dog fetus is in gestation for 9 weeks (63 days). The human pregnancy being about 6 times longer than that of a dog.

    • The similarities of human and dog pregnancies are morning sickness, gain weight, need to eat more, infant kicks the womb, attached to umbilical cord and fragile little bodies.

    • Puppies joints needs to keep on moving. If
    • the joints didn’t move or stopped moving,
    • the joints would freeze.
    • There are ways to see if the baby is alive at
    • birth. For puppies, humans clean off the
    • placenta and helps the puppy breath. With
    • humans, the doctor slaps the baby’s behind
    • or the baby cries after being born.

    • or a girl?
    • Using a few drops of the mother’s blood, 7
    • weeks earlier to see if it’s a boy or a girl.
    • What is used to view the baby in the womb?
    • An ultrasound. This device gives women a
    • view of what the baby looks like and picks
    • up sound from the baby like kicking.
