    3. 3. Preliminary Steps <ul><li>Notify your chair of your intent to seek tenure or promotion 6-8 months before application is due. </li></ul><ul><li>Verify your eligibility with your chair. If necessary, clarify it in writing before proceeding. </li></ul><ul><li>Establish a deadline (at least 2 months before it is due) for initial review of your portfolio. </li></ul>

Keys to A Successful Approach <ul><li>Always provide evidence and documentation of all your claims. </li></ul><ul><li>Ensure that support letters (including the chair’s letter) speak to your strengths and weaknesses and indicate the nature and length of relationship with the writers. </li></ul>
