WHY? <ul><li>Newman Catholic Campus Ministry at the University of Akron has received requests from membership for more service opportunities. </li></ul><ul><li>In providing these opportunities the mission of Newman Ministry is being fulfilled in a more active way. </li></ul><ul><li>To fulfill this goal our project consists of the establishment of “Apostolate for Caring.” </li></ul><ul><li>Included in this Apostolate are areas for service to the hungry, children, ill, and homebound. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Serving with Swipes Suggested leader: Mike S. <ul><li>A program for all Akron students to use the extra meal swipes on their student IDs at the end of the week to donate non-perishable food items to local food pantries. </li></ul>

Serving with Swipes <ul><li>In the Spring of 2011, the program was implemented </li></ul><ul><li>Results: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>10 week program </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>5-8 bags of food collected per week </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>1 car and 1 collector </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Running through summer session </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Targeting Freshmen this Fall semester </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Working with Associated Student Government to accept unused Swipe card balances and convert to food donations for hot meals and food pantries. </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Serving with Swipes <ul><li>Will again start at the beginning of the academic year. </li></ul><ul><li>This proven program requires little implementation at this time. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Hospital and Homebound Ministerial Services Suggested leader: Marie G. <ul><li>An opportunity to: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Act as a Eucharistic Minister to those in the hospital & homebound </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Volunteer at area hospitals in whatever capacity needed </li></ul></ul>

Hospital and Homebound Ministerial Services <ul><li>To implement this program we must: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Contact hospitals to figure out specific needs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Contact the parish affiliated with Akron’s Newman Center to determine need for administering Holy Communion to the homebound </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Provide training opportunities for students to become Eucharistic Ministers </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Coordinate needed training with hospitals for volunteers </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. Student Tutoring Suggested Leader: Brittany R. <ul><li>An opportunity to: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Help enrich the learning experience of local grade school students </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Provide a good role model and establish a faith filled relationship </li></ul></ul>

Student Tutoring <ul><li>To implement this project we must: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Coordinate with school administrators and teachers to establish the academic needs of the students </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Set-up schedules for transportation </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Coordinate required Virtus training and BCI check </li></ul></ul>

Alternative Spring Break Project Suggested Leaders: Alex L. & Laura M. <ul><li>An opportunity to: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Provide outreach to various communities of our country that are in need </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Witness first hand the hardships of others </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Respond to the Lord and the Church’s call to social justice </li></ul></ul>

Alternative Spring Break Project <ul><li>To implement this program we must: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Determine student interest in a specific destination </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Coordinate trip registrations </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Determine financial needs of trip </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Fundraise to subsidize the financial obligations of the trip </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Coordinate with sponsoring agency for requirements and transportation needs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Schedule organizational meetings of interested students </li></ul></ul>

ADVERTISING/RECRUITMENT <ul><li>Informational Flyer for all facets of program </li></ul><ul><li>Update of website </li></ul><ul><li>University “Zip-Mail” and Radio Station </li></ul><ul><li>Facebook/Twitter announcements </li></ul><ul><li>Parish Bulletin announcements </li></ul><ul><li>Response Form on website or email for anyone who is interested in participating in the program or an individual program facet. </li></ul>

Summary <ul><li>The Newman Apostolate for Caring: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Is a response to membership requests for service opportunities </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Is an opportunity to put our faith into action </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Provides a visible sign of Newman Catholic Campus Ministry’s presence to the University community, Catholic community and the City of Akron </li></ul></ul>
