Lesson 2 Plate Tectonics And Volcanoes

 1. 1. Plate names African Indo-Australian Plate North American South American Eurasian Pacific Nazca Antarctic Pacific
 2. 2. Plate Boundaries. First task- To find out what happens at the 4 different plate boundaries.
 3. 3. Constructive plate boundary
 4. 4. Destructive plate boundary
 5. 5. Collision plate boundary
 6. 6. Conservative plate boundary
 7. 7. Task

Label the key features at the four plate boundaries.

Then cut them out and stick them into your books.

Underneath each I want a sentence to explain what is happening

Which way are the plates moving.

What happens as a result.

 8. 8. Homework.

To find out the date and location of a recent earthquake and volcano and the impact these had on human activity.

 9. 9. Plate definitions
 10. 10. Label this cross section of a volcano

Volcanic bombs, ash, lava, gases

Magma chamber

Parasitic cone

Crater

Main vent

 11. 11. Active volcano – liable to erupt.
 12. 12. Dormant (sleeping) volcano – a volcano which has not erupted for many years
 13. 13. Extinct volcano – a volcano which has not erupted for many thousands or millions of years
 14. 14. Types of Volcano

Composite Volcano

Shield Volcano

 15. 15. Shield Volcano

Occur at Constructive Plate Boundaries.

Runny Lava that flows along way from the main vent.

Gives the volcano gentle sides.

Shield volcanoes almost never erupt violently due to the lava running free (no rocks).

 16. 16. Composite Volcanoes.

Occur st destructive plate boundaries.

Viscous (thick lava)

The lava cannot flow far from the vent.

Makes the volcano steep sided.

Violent eruptions due to rapidly hardeneing rock which blocks vents and allows the pressure to build.

 17. 17. Dominoes.

Lets test your knowledge so far.
