      • Short document with three main parts
        • The smil Element
        • The Document head
        • The Document body
      • Appendices
        • How to extend SMIL and implement proprietary extensions
          • QuickTime and RealNetworks

      • Official W3C reference is:

      • Much larger and complex document
        • Provide an XML based language for authoring
        • Permit reuse of SMIL syntax and semantics in other XML-based languages
      • Defined as a set of 10 modules
      • Small syntax changes from SMIL 1.0
        • Drops hyphenated values
        • Uses camel case for attribute names
        • SMIL 2.0 clients are expect to support legacy SMIL 1.0
      • Two major branches to implementations of the language
        • Host Language that includes the Structure Module and SMIL Namespace
          • SMIL 2.0 Language Profile (RealONE, GRiNS)
          • SMIL 2.0 Basic Profile (MMS and portable devices)
        • Integration Set
          • Integration of language modules into another XML based language - XHTML
          • XHTML+TIME
          • Internet Explorer v5.5 and v6

      • The 10 modules are:
        • Animation
        • Content Control
        • Layout
        • Linking
        • Media Objects
        • Metainformation
        • Structure
        • Timing and Synchronisation
        • Time Manipulation
        • Transitions
      • Each modules may itself be modular
        • Animation Module
          • BasicAnimation Module
          • SplineAnimation Module
      • An XML application remember!
