    Linking - Presentation Transcript

    1. 11 Linking Adding Links to Content
    2. 11.1 About Linking
      • Linking provides familiar interaction for users
      • Selecting a link to create and event
        • Textual link
        • Form button
        • Image or video
        • Area of an image or video
      • Linking in SMIL is similar to that in HTML
      • SMIL 2.0 Linking Module defines
        • The link elements
          • <a> element
          • <area> element
        • The attributes for each of these elements
          • Some attributes are unique to SMIL 2.0
      • Methods for doing this are client specific
        • XHTML+TIME does not implement the SMIL 2.0 Linking Module
          • Use the linking supported by the XHTML client IEv6
        • RealONE implements the SMIL 2.0 Linking Module
          • Adds some proprietary extensions
          • Supports complex windowing environment -
          • Can be confusing to the user?
      • Can use <excl> groups rather than hyperlinks
    3. 11.2 Creating Hyperlinks
      • Use of hyperlinks needs careful thought and planning
        • Define the interaction required before writing SMIL code
      • Hyperlinks only work with clip source tags
      • Multiple <area> based links can be used for visual clips
      • Use of area turns <unary/> elements into <binary><binary/> elements
      • Use SMIL 2.0 MediaAccessibility Module alt attribute to describe the link
        • Use clips longdesc attribute to describe the hyperlink
      • Used with <excl/> group can support hyperlinks to points within a SMIL presentation
      • Move around the timeline of the presentation or to other presentations
        • Use the familiar HTML constructs
          • <a href=“ID”>
          • <a href=“http://
      <par> <video id=“video1” src=“ path_to_video_file ” …> <area href=“ URL_or_path_to_video_file ” begin=“0” end=“15” …/> <area href=“ URL_or_path_to_the_video_file ” begin=“20” end=“35” …/> </video> </par>
    4. 11.3 Link Attribute Reference
      • RealNetworks Production Guide
        • Latest version always available from:
          • PDF, HML and HTML Help
          • Included on CD in all these formats
      • Appendix D: SMIL Tag Summary
          • <a></a>
          • <area/>
    5. 11.4 Defining Area Hotspots
      • Any number of hotspots of any type can be defined over an image or video
      • Timing attributes can be applied to hotspots
        • begin=“scene1.begin+10”
        • Area becomes active 10 seconds after the element scene1 begins
    6. 11.5 Linking Examples
      • Using the <a> element
      • Using the <area/> element
        • Linking active for a specific time
      • Using <area> with <excl> group
      • Linking to a specific point in a SMIL file:
        • Same SMIL file
        • Remote SMIL file
      • Using the RealONE windowing model
    7. 11.6 Review
      • SMIL 2.0 linking similar to HTML
      • Two linking elements
        • <a> simple hyperlinks
        • <area> making visual elements interactive
      • For XHTML+TIME clients use HTML linking
      • Timing can be applied to links
        • Links can become active and be deactivated
      • Links can open secondary windows
      • RealONE player has complex windowing environment
