The Simple Genius of Quiet

 1. 1. CLARITY
Unified Communications
Clarity for Your Ears
Creating Something as Simple and Genius as Quiet
2. 2. When It Comes to Unification…
“Houston. We have a problem.”
becomes
“Houston. We have 2 problems.”
Problem #1 – Noise
Problem #2 - Change
3. 3. Problem #1 - Noise
Noise is the ENEMY
Sound is not
Noise blurs your message and impedes your ability to deliver your ideas with clarity
The only thing standing between you and noise is PLANTRONICS
Sound
Noise
4. 4. Transporting Noise
Modern telephones merely extend your voice geographically.
Limited frequency range
Susceptible to noise
Plantronics headsets makes certain your voice is heard.
Great frequency range
Noise cancelling
5. 5. Why Should I Care?
Every day we are assaulted by noise
Talking – 60dB
Phone ringing – 80dB
Computers – 40dB
Air Conditioning – 60dB
iPod – 100dB (average)
Office – 90dB
What about the noise we don’t hear?
6. 6. The Science Behind Noise
Infrasound and Ultrasound
Sound below 20 hertz and above 20k hertz (outside human hearing range)
Bad moods, lack of concentration, fatigue, and poor work performance can result from continual exposure to unpleasant noise
According to Dr. Alice H. Suter, an audiologist at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health: “Noise is also associated with an increase in aggression and a decrease in cooperation.”
7. 7. Creating Quiet
Without the ability to filter noise you are EXTENDING your negative environment to the person on the end of the call.
In its own small way PLANTRONICS is going to make your office a better place
Life enriching
Creating something as simple and genius as quiet
8. 8. Problem #2 - Change
Unifying communication is about CHANGE
Recalcitrant (I don’t do Change)
If the proposed change has a negative impact on our current state then it will be resisted
There only needs to be a perceived negative impact and there will be resistance
To succeed in Change you need to:
Feed the Rational
Comfort the Emotional
Herald the Champion
9. 9. The Catch-22 of Noisy Environments
Now imagine sending that noise through your microphone (along with your speech)
This is why we don’t make conference calls from crowded airports
It is why we ask cell phone users to mute
One of the most highly used feature in a conference bridge is far-end-mute
Removing noise from the remote end of the call thereby making the call clear
Counter productive since the whole point is exchanging information
10. 10. Thought Provoking Rationale
What I find most interesting about unification technologies is that they all have one thing in common: AUDIO
Why would we be willing to spend many thousands of dollars unifying communications without solving the problem of noise?
Audio CLARITY is as much a key to efficient communications as presence is to unifying it
10
11. 11. The Solution is Obvious
NOISE CANCELATION technology has existed for many years and can minimize the impact your environment has on the total communications experience
This only addresses the noise caused by electrical interference on carrier circuits
12. 12. The Simple Genius of QUIET
CLARITY
13. 13. Summary
Unified Communications is about the efficient exchange of information across multiple devices
Filtering noise improves message clarity and in turn improves efficient information exchange
In order to adopt UC people must change HOW they communicate
By simply adding a filter between environments you will enrich the workplace making change easier to accept
