REALITY: In an ideal world this would be true; however, often overworked recruiters or hiring managers do not have the time to enter the new jobs online or delete the old ones. Most companies have unofficial or unadvertised job openings. If the right candidate applied, the recruiter would pursue his or her resume.
  • 3. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: If I send my resume to a company several times it will get noticed and they will see how interested I am in their company. REALITY: Although the company may notice your resume, it will not be for a good reason. ACTION: Send your resume once, and use our follow up strategy outlined in Chapter Seven.
  • 4. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: My resume was properly downloaded to the job board or the hiring company’s website. REALITY: Depending on the technology used by the job board or website, such things as complicated fonts, text boxes, graphics, etc, may actually prevent your resume from being downloaded or only partially downloaded. ACTION: Use the Ugly Resume format found in this book for …
  • 5. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: All companies use the major job boards to search for candidates and post job openings. REALITY: Most companies operate on a limited recruiting budget. Advertising job openings and searching the candidate databases of the major job boards can become quite expensive. To offset recruiting costs many companies choose to post openings on their company website or on niche job boards where they are more likely to find the type of candidate they want. ACTION: Be creative in your job search. Think “where would …
  • 6. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: I will be hired based on my education and past work history. REALITY: These two things will likely get you an interview, but if you can’t sell yourself to the company and explain how you are going to improve their business, then you won’t get hired. ACTION: When creating the profile on your resume and during an interview always ask…
  • 7. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: Most companies do not check references or verify education. REALITY: Recruiters are judged on the quality, caliber and work ethic of the candidates they hire. Be assured they will do all their homework before presenting a candidate to upper management. ACTION: Ensure that all educational credentials are accurate on your resume. Ensure that your references know…
  • 8. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: If a company likes my resume, they will call me to schedule an interview. REALITY: In today’s technological recruiting world, recruiters are bombarded with resumes. Although a recruiter may notice your resume and have the best intentions to call you, you may get lost in the paperwork (or email work). ACTION: Use our follow up strategy outlined in Chapter Seven to properly follow up on the resume submission.
  • 9. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: Someone will actually look at my resume. REALITY: Unless your resume contains certain key words, it is unlikely that it will ever by viewed by a person. ACTION: Ensure that your resume contains…
  • 10. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: The Company will see that I am a perfect fit for the position. REALITY: Don’t assume that the person reading your resume understands what you do and shares your vision match. You must clearly articulate why you are a fit for the position. ACTION: Include a profile at the beginning of your resume which clearly defines…
  • 11. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: Placing my resume on all the major job boards will guarantee more interviews. REALITY: Not all companies use the major boards. ACTION: The best way to guarantee more interviews is to …
  • 12. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: Companies won’t remember you applying for previous jobs or with a different hiring manager. REALITY: Inexpensive storage solutions, advanced software programs and discrimination law suits ensure that most if not all correspondence and interviewing notes are recorded and easily accessible. ACTION: If you have a bad track record or experience with a company, don’t waste your time applying again. Chances are you are not going to get hired.
  • 13. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: I interviewed with a company several months ago, it went very well and the manager wanted to offer me a job, but a hiring freeze was enacted. The hiring manager will call me with the hiring freeze is lifted. REALITY: If you don’t follow up with the manager he/she may assume you have found other work, or they may have forgotten about you, lost your number, etc - it is worth a follow up call. ACTION: Follow up with the manager until you get a definitive “no”. Ensure you use the our techniques outlined in Chapter 6.
  • 14. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: It is illegal for a hiring company to use social networking sites to find out information about candidates. REALITY: Not true. Savvy recruiters will often conduct Google ™ searches or search social media sites to find out information about candidates before they call them. Information found on these sites could be very detrimental to your job search. ACTION: Ensure that you have properly branded yourself as a great candidate (refer to Chapter Two)
  • 15. Recruiting Myths from resumes get JOBS! MYTH: Hiring authorities don’t accept phone calls from candidates. REALITY: A hiring manager may be too busy to take your call, but a well composed voice message about your interest in a position will certainly raise your application above other candidates.
