  • Unlike 100 years ago when infectious diseases dominate, degenerative diseases are now the major problem of world health. (Singapore is no exception). Despite billions of dollars in global research, there remain no effective cure for most of the top killers. The numbers are frightening. If we go by the statistics, over half of the people in this room will die of either cancer, heart disease or stroke.

  • But most degenerative diseases are preventable. We must first understand that these diseases are NOT an inevitable result of old age. “Old” does not equal “Sick” – not necessarily. Almost all degenerative diseases result from cumulated damage to our cells. So, if we protect our cells from damage, we have the best chance to live a long healthy life.
  • Our cells are damaged by Free Radicals. A free radical is a molecule with unpaired electrons in its outer shell. It is highly reactive, and will “rob” a neighboring molecule of its electron, which in turn becomes a free radical – setting off a chain reaction of destruction. Free radicals come not only from pollution and toxins from the outside, but are also generated by our cells during the process of burning food for energy. So there is no practical way of avoiding them. What we need are Antioxidants to protect our cells. Antioxidants donate electrons to free radicals, but do not become free radicals as a result. Hence they stop the chain reaction of destruction. We should get a significant amount of antioxidants from our food. The more the antioxidants in our body, the less damage free radicals cause.

  • First, let us look at Eating Right. Eating right gives our cells the most basic building blocks to build new, healthy cells. Variety is key. The Food pyramid gives us a good guide on how our daily diet should be. (Go though the different food groups.) Dr Myron Wentz like to say, “Eat Low in the Food Chain.” But that is not enough. Processing and Cooking often destroys a lot of the nutrients. So we should not only strive to eat lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains – but also in as raw a form as we can get.

  • Often, unhealthy food appear more attractive. We have been accustomed to the taste of fat, oil, deep frying, and generous amounts of sugar, salt and spices. So the first step in taking charge of your health involves mentally committing to eating right.
  • Next, we have to exercise regularly. The human body is designed for movement for many reasons, and regular activity helps our cells in many ways. While our circulatory system has a pump (the heart) to transport nutrients and oxygen to the cells, the lymphatic system that removes the waste material from the cells back into the blood stream relies on muscular movement to work. Inactivity results in an accumulation of toxic waste material in our cells. Exercise also promotes cardiovascular fitness and slows the loss of muscle mass. Yet we are often attuned to inactivity. We drive instead of walk or cycle. Our children prefer video games than outdoor games. We do not need to over-exert ourselves. But we DO need to commit to regular movement.
  • The third action is to minimize stress, and not just mental stress. By reducing the oxidative stress on our cells, we can lower the rate of cellular damage. Avoid unhealthy habits like smoking and excessive drinking. Perfumes, for example, often contain concentrated chemicals that go right through our skin. Be aware of the environment, and avoid polluted areas. Dr Wentz recently published a book on the danger of mercury in dental filling – another source of toxicity. Finally, embrace happiness and learn to deal with stressful situation. In summary, all actions that reduce the oxidative load on our body give a chance for our body to heal. It is not enough just to have good antioxidant protection if the rate of attack and damage continue to exceed the rate of defense and repair.
