  • 2. History of Reggae
    • Reggae music originated in the late 1960’s in Jamaica in a town called Kingston
    • When Jamaica was control by Spain many slaves would be brought to Jamaica from Africa
    • They would bring their own culture, beliefs and music
    • Their earliest music was Jamaican Folks Music
  • 3.
    • In the early 1900 Mento was formed which led to the development of Ska
    • During world war II Jamaicans listen to Jazz and R&B
    • The Ska beat was made slower which created Rock Steady
    • Rock Steady only lasted 2 years and the led into Reggae
  • 4. Influences
    • Reggae had a great influence on people from Jamaica because many of the topics that were sang had messages dealing with Jamaican life
    • Many of topics were about happiness, poverty, relationships, love, religion, peace, sexuality, injustice and poverty
    • Also they would sing about political issues
    • When reggae first came out it was mostly popular in Jamaica
    • Most of the reggae artist would start their carriers in Kingston
  • 5. Instruments
    • Guitar
    • Drums
    • Bass
  • 6. Guitar
    • The guitar mostly used in reggae are the Rhythm guitar and the Led guitar
    • The rhythm of the guitar is very important in reggae
    • Guitarist usually play in the upstroke in beats 2 and 4
  • 7. Drums
    • The drums in reggae are usually tuned high, to give it timbale-type sound
    • Some drummers add percussion instruments like the triangle and horn
  • 8. Bass
    • The most cowmen instrument played is the bass guitar
    • When played it is played at a low tune, to give it a heavy thick sound
  • 9. Other
    • Keyboardist use pianos, organs, and synthesizers to double the skanking rhythm of the guitar and to give the music a choppy, shuffling feel
    • Reggae groups use trumpets, trombones, and saxophones in introductions and to add countermelodies to songs
  • 10. Bob Marley
    • He was born Robert Nesta Marley on February 6, 1945, in St.Ann, Jamaica
    • Soon as he was born his father left his mother
    • In the late 50’s due to the low amount of jobs Bob had to go to Trench tow (west Kingston) with his mother
    • In Kingston he meats Neville Livingstone who becomes his best friend
    • Bob and Neville take music classes from the Jamaican singer Joe Higgs
    • Jimmy Cliff introduced Bob to Leslie Kong, a local record producer which help him record his first single "Judge Not"

  • 12. The Wailers
    • The band was formed in 1963 with Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer
    • Other members were Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelson, Cherry Smith, Aston and Carlton Barrett
    • The Wailers help spread reggae all over the world
    • They would go on tours to the United Kingdom
    • The band ended with the death of Bob Marley during 1981

  • 14. Ziggy Marley
    • He was born David Marley on October 17, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica
    • He recorded his first single with his 3 siblings in 1979: “Children Playing in the Streets” which was written by his father
    • After his father passed a way ziggy created the band the Melody Makers that consisted of his siblings
    • In addition to his music, Marley established the U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightment) organization to help children in poverty
