    2. Introduction The project “Competitiveness and knowledge in the tourist sector. TOUREG” has as objective achieve the competitiveness and knowledge in the tourist sector improving the competitiveness and strategic position through the establishment of a platform for the generation and transmission of knowledge. The 12 TOUREG partners come from six different countries: Spain, Portugal, Greece, Sweden, Romania and Bulgaria. TOUREG starts in January 2008 and will finish in June 2010. 2
    3. Objectives I Strategic objective: “Improving the competitiveness and strategic position of the services sector and in particular tourist-oriented sectors in European regions, through the establishment of a platform for the generation and transmission of knowledge based on technological innovation and research in the tourist sector”. General objectives: • To adapt and to strengthen the R&D+I public policies, the specific or related ones to the tourist sector. • Establish an itinerary for the generation and transfer of R&D+I knowledge in the tourist sector. • Promote, diversify and specialize in R&D+I activity in the tourist sector. • Facilitate the establishment of a platform for the generation of knowledge in the tourist sector. • Increase productivity in the tourist sector. • Exchange experiences between the participating regions and countries. 3

Objectives II Specific objectives: • The creation and consolidation of a research-driven cluster at international level, structured around the consortium of European partners created in the framework of this project. • Creation of regional working networks to improve competitiveness in the tourist- oriented services sector, with the idea of transferring knowledge, technology and experiences to the other regions involved. • A global perspective SWOT analysis on the sector in the areas taking part. • A common model for the transfer of knowledge between regions. • Cooperation between research organizations, businesses and public authorities. • Draw up a Technology Map for identifying any synergies in the cluster as a whole. • Identify, define and prepare a feasibility plan for the development of joint action between project partners, action that would help to diversify and specialize R&D+I in the tourist-oriented services sector with a view to improving its competitiveness. • Produce conclusions and recommendations that will help to improve and adapt public R&D+I policies to the requirements of the sector in question in the participating regions, bearing in mind the European and international context. 4
