This is an excellent good presentation. I just completed a social networking workshop and it echoed many of the same points you make here. Creating and maintaining one’s on-line image is critical and as you say, your image will be on the web for a looong time. Thank you.

Job Hunting In A Web 2.0 World - Presentation Transcript

  1. Job Hunting in a   Web 2.0 World by John Piekos Sr. Director, Engineering [email_address] aim: JohnWPiekos linkedIn.com/johnpiekos twitter.com/jpiekos facebook.com/profile.php?id=540404663
  2. In 2009, your Division shuts down...
      • The Good news: There appear to be jobs out there, if you know where to look
      • In 2009 you have a VAST ARRAY of free communication tools at your disposal, and you can use them to find a new job
  3. The current landscape
      • Common posting on corporate websites: " No recruiters or offshore teams please, we've already got our hands full, thanks."
    •
      • Relying solely on Recruiters is "bad"
        • Employer's market
        • Very costly, at 15% to 25% of base salary
        • Even fix-fee ($15k) difficult to part with
      • Public posting of resume is "bad", in my opinion:
        • Monster, The Ladders, etc.  Why pay?
        • Too passive of an approach to the job hunt
        • But may be useful in a "cover all bases" approach
    •
      • Hiring managers are using Social and Web 2.0 to fill jobs
        • Personal recommendations are still the best method to get "in"
  4. Web 2.0 tools at your disposal
      • Job posting and aggregation sites
      • The Social Web: LinkedIn, Facebook
      • Blogs, including Twitter
      • Company Websites
      • Mail lists and groups (yahoo, facebook, linkedin groups)
      • Web 0.0:  Trade newspapers, like Mass High Tech
      • Tools:
        • RSS reader (feeds)
        • E-mail alerts
  5. Job Posting Websites
      • indeed.com:  "one search.  all jobs."
    •
      • simplyhired.com
    •
      • These sites aggregate from the likes of monster, dice.com, theladders.com etc.
    •
      • VentureLoop.com
        • http://ventureloop.com/ventureloop/job_search.php
      • Craigslist: Yes, Craiglist!
      • Set up alerts for your query
        • Either email or RSS feeds
  6. The scoop on CraigsList
      • Not only for buying/selling cars and junk, or "hooking up"
      • Low-cost way for employer to post job opening ($25 per post)
      • New jobs posted daily!  In all categories.
        • Search, and RSS...
  7. The Social Web

        • Stay connected professionally
      • Facebook
        • Stay connected socially

      • Don't have an account, get one!
        • Remember your parents having trouble programming the VCR?
        • Don't get "stuck", don't be "afraid" of new technology

        • in-mail is a two-way street, hiring, getting hired
        • Your online resume: get recommendations, give recommendations
      • MAJOR TIP: With a target company, search for company to find people who work there

        • Be aware of what your "friends" are doing
        • Get ideas on how to reach out and reconnect
          • "Happy Birthday!"  (boring! but can work)
      • Social events, company "fan" pages, and technology/job groups to join
      • Remember: what you post defines your public image
        • Avoid posting "frat party" photos
        • May stay there forever...
