In summary, we have demonstrated the preparation of elongated, thorn-shaped particles by using a seeding growth method starting from ultrathin gold NWs. The resulting thorned Au NWs display extremely strong optical enhancing properties and can be readily used as platforms for SERS and for integration in ultrasensitive optical devices.
