  • 2.     The name Winnipeg is a transcription of the western Cree word wi-nipe-k meaning "muddy waters"; The first French officer arrived in the Winnipeg in 1738.Sieur de La Vérendrye built the first fur trading post on the site, called Fort Rouge. Francophone trading continued for several decades before the arrival of the British Hudson's Bay Company. After that there came a new kind of people the Métis,which were the mixchildren of french and english people who were married to first nation women

  • 4.  The Forks is a historic site, meeting place and green space in Downtown Winnipeg located at the confluence of the Red River and Assiniboine River.
  • 5. • • • Aboriginal groups arrived at The Forks site around 6,000 years ago Nakoda (Assiniboins), Cree, Anishinaabe (Ojibwa) and Sioux (Dakota) visited the site. In 1734 European fur traders arrived at the site and initiated trade with the local peoples, using the Assiniboine people as fur trade middlemen

  • 8.    Originally two adjacent stables for competing rail companies circa early 1900, the horse stalls were joined together by a courtyard and bridges to create The Forks Market, Winnipeg’s incomparable shopping experience. The market also comprises two storeys of vendors selling everything from fresh fruit, bread, meat, and wine to cigars and aromatherapy products to crafts and artworks from 300 local and Canadian artisans There are four full service restaurants in the Forks Market: Sushi Train , Sydney's , The Beachcomber & Ba Ja Beach Club, and The Original Pancake House. There is also a food court and numerous quick service food vendors
  • 9.  The Forks Market features a six storey tower with viewing platform, which is accessible by stairs or elevator and features interpretive panels with information on the site's history.
  • 10.  Across the courtyard from the Forks Market is the four-storey building which known asJohnston Terminal ,formerly a cold storage railway warehouse(in 1930), is now home to a variety of unique specialty boutiques and stores, plus offices, a pub, café and The Old Spaghetti Factory, a large comfortable, locally popular restaurant with an outdoor patio.

Located at the heart of the The Forks (adjacent to the Johnston Terminal), the Explore Manitoba Centre is a permanent themed pavilion with over 8,000 square feet of incredible displays and exhibits that gives both visitors and residents alike a true sense of the diversity and grandeur of Manitoba. The Explore Manitoba Centre also serves as a full-service information centre, providing visitors with information on Manitoba and Winnipeg.
  • 12.    A fun family destination! Housed in the oldest surviving train repair facility in Manitoba, the Children’s Museum features twelve permanent galleries that spark kids’ creative learning. Originally opened at a different location in 1986, the museum's moved to its current building at the Forks in 1994 It has gaint illusion tunnel & a splash lab public programs, workshops .

  • 14.   This is a five storey hotel having 116 guest rooms and meeting and reception space for up to 200 people, fitness facilities. The hotel features natural slate floors in the main lobby, glass vanities in the suite washrooms, heated floors, and a water wall in the spa
  • 15.  "Wall Through Time" is a sculpture depicting the history of the Forks, which features two bronze shells and a limestone centrepiece
  • 16.  Just outside The Forks Market are two completely restored turn of the century rail cars. One car is for display, while the other is home to "Sugar Mountain Express", a candy store
  • 17.   The Forks will be the location of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (the first national museum outside of Ottawa) once it has completed construction in 2014-2015. The site for the museum is one of archaeological importance relating to First Nations history
  • 18.   There is a canopy between the Forks Market and Johnston Terminal It has some posts on pillars which are known as flood markers which shows the water levels of major floods in 1852, 1950 & 1997
  • 19.  The Forks has a Prairie Garden, which is a natural wild garden with over 10,000 plants in over 150 native plant species, including 38 prairie plants
  • 20.   Since 1992, Splash Dash has been bringing Winnipeg's riverways to the world. Scenic and historically informative half-hour tours of Winnipeg's downtown waterways leave The Forks harbour every 15 minutes from 10:00 am to sunset, seven days a week. Boat captains provide commentary and historical insights on many points of interest .they operate from May 20th to October 15th.
  • 21.   "The Plaza" is the largest urban skate plaza and bowl complex in Canada The design features 'skateable' artwork, and is built to tolerate the regular use and enjoyment of skateboarders and cyclists

  • 23. One of the city’s jewels, The Assiniboine Riverwalk winds along the riverbanks from underneath Esplanade Riel all the way to the foot of the Manitoba Legislature. Featuring interpretive plaques concerning area history, the walk showcases a distinctive river’s eye view of central Winnipeg.
