PARABLES <ul><li>What the parables are? </li></ul><ul><li>Parables are a method of speech, in which moral or religious truths are illustrated from the analogy of common experience </li></ul><ul><li>The parables of Jesus recorded in the gospels are unique and remains ever fresh to the readers </li></ul><ul><li>Old Testament rarely have parables (Jud.9: 8-15) </li></ul><ul><li>Jesus taught mainly through parables (Mk.5: 34) </li></ul><ul><li>Example- The parable of the kingdom of heaven (Mat. 13) </li></ul>

THE PARABLES <ul><li>THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PARABLES, THE SIMILE AND </li></ul><ul><li>THE METAPHOR </li></ul><ul><li>Mainly in the length of it </li></ul><ul><li>Parables are longer comparatively </li></ul><ul><li>Simile and Metaphors are short and so difficult to define </li></ul><ul><li>clearly </li></ul><ul><li>“ Like a sheep dumb before the sheerer” (Is.53: 7) Is a simile </li></ul><ul><li>“ Ye are the salt of the earth” (Mat.5: 13) is a metaphor </li></ul>

THE PARABLES (ADVANTAGES) <ul><li>Could easily adhere to the memory of the Hearer than long statements </li></ul><ul><li>Preacher could use against any person, who will not listen </li></ul><ul><li>or admit in a normal way </li></ul><ul><li>(Ex. Nathan to David; of the Eve lamb - 2.Sam.12: 1- 12) </li></ul><ul><li>Will listen patiently, condemn soon, but realize later only, </li></ul><ul><li>he was condemning himself </li></ul><ul><li>Good parables are of Common and familiar things to the </li></ul><ul><li>hearer, so that he can easily understand. </li></ul>

THE PARABLES <ul><li>Jesus mainly taught through parables </li></ul><ul><li>Mark 4:33-34 And with many such parables spake he the </li></ul><ul><li>word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without </li></ul><ul><li>a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, </li></ul><ul><li>he expounded all things to his disciples. </li></ul><ul><li>Jesus said; </li></ul><ul><li>Mark 4:11 Unto you it is given to know the mystery of </li></ul><ul><li>the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all </li></ul><ul><li>these things are done in parables: </li></ul>

THE PARABLES <ul><li>THE REASON WHY JESUS SPOKE THRU PARABLES </li></ul><ul><li>It was fulfillment of himself (Ps.78: 2; Mat.13: 35) </li></ul><ul><li>Fulfillment of the prophecies (Is.6: 9; Mat.13: 14) </li></ul><ul><li>They were messages of judgment to Israel (Mk.4: 11) </li></ul><ul><li>Spoken in mercy lest they should have greater condemnation (Acts.3: 17) </li></ul><ul><li>Mystery for them; but for us given to know (Mk.4: 11) </li></ul>

THE PARABLES <ul><li>No parables in the Gospel of John </li></ul><ul><li>Parables in Mark and Luke are of the Kingdom of God </li></ul><ul><li>Parables in Matthew are of the Kingdom of Heaven </li></ul><ul><li>Seven Parables in Matthew Ch.13 are of the nature of the </li></ul><ul><li>kingdom of Heaven </li></ul><ul><li>Rest of the Five parables shows the manner how to conduct </li></ul><ul><li>in the Kingdom of Heaven </li></ul><ul><li>(Some may disagree the Kingdom of God and Kingdom of Heaven are not different-for the similarities seen in some of the parables) </li></ul><ul><li>Argument: Matthew being a Jew avoided the word “God” -is not relevant- in Matthew itself we read “Kingdom of God” (21: 43) </li></ul>

THE PARABLES (Differences) <ul><li>THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND KINGDOM OF HEAVEN </li></ul><ul><li>The Kingdom of God covers the divine authority over the </li></ul><ul><li>entire universe of all times, all inclusive of those who are </li></ul><ul><li>willing to be controlled by God’s will, either angels (holy) </li></ul><ul><li>or of the saints of the New or the Old Testament. </li></ul><ul><li>But the Kingdom of Heaven has as its ultimate purpose of the </li></ul><ul><li>setting up of the Kingdom on earth. (1.Cor.15: 24- 25) </li></ul><ul><li>The coming of the king was announced and the way prepared </li></ul><ul><li>by John the Baptist as forerunner </li></ul><ul><li>Jesus himself preached the approach of the kingdom the repentance was the sign of acceptance for some. </li></ul><ul><li>Since they rejected the king, the kingdom postponed </li></ul>

THE PARABLES (Differences – Conti..) <ul><li>THE NATURE OF THE KINGDOM </li></ul><ul><li>(JEWS EXPECTED AND REASON FOR REJECTION) </li></ul><ul><li>As Son of David on the throne (Jer.23: 5-6) </li></ul><ul><li>World wide worship of the Lord (Mal.1: 11) </li></ul><ul><li>Re-establishment of world peace (Is. 2: 2-4) </li></ul><ul><li>Even nature regaining glory (Is. 35: 1-2) </li></ul><ul><li>(Since they rejected the king, kingdom postponed, from </li></ul><ul><li>rejection till His coming again to establish the earthly </li></ul><ul><li>kingdom, is the period of the Kingdom of heaven ) </li></ul>

THE PARABLES (Differences) Conti… <ul><li>What the Kingdom of Heaven is? </li></ul><ul><li>Not the Church - For the Lord add such as should be saved </li></ul><ul><li>unto the Church (Acts.2: 47) </li></ul><ul><li>Not the kingdom of God - For the entry is through new birth </li></ul><ul><li>(Born again) Jn. 3: 3; 5 </li></ul><ul><li>So the kingdom of Heaven is the present so called </li></ul><ul><li>“ Visible Christendom” </li></ul><ul><li>In the kingdom of Heaven , there is “ wheat and tares ”, the “ good and evil ”, the “ good and bad fishes ”, the “wise and foolish virgins”, but not in the Kingdom of God. </li></ul>

( But not read as entered) </li></ul><ul><li>Luke 18:17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive </li></ul><ul><li>the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein. (None can enter by violence) </li></ul><ul><li>Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence , and the violent take it by force. </li></ul>

THE PARABLES (HOW TO INTERPRET) <ul><li>The correct method to interpret </li></ul><ul><li>Read and observe the parables, and how the Lord gave the interpretations, do the word study. </li></ul><ul><li>Follow the same guideline; interpret with the Bible than </li></ul><ul><li>putting in own ideas (Inductive study) </li></ul><ul><li>Observe the similarities and differences of similar Parables </li></ul><ul><li>Let interpretations be EXIGETIC and not EISIGESIS </li></ul>

THE MUSTARD SEED (Mat.13: 31-32) </li></ul><ul><li>Similar in Mark 4: 30-32 (Kingdom of God) </li></ul><ul><li>(Small beginning but great growth cannot be denied) </li></ul><ul><li>Least of all seeds- Just for familiar reason </li></ul><ul><li>Grown great among the herbs- Spurious growth </li></ul><ul><li>(Reason rooted to earth ; Church to Christ. Col.2: 7) </li></ul><ul><li>Fowls speak of evil (Mat.13: 19; Dan.4: 12) </li></ul><ul><li>(Growth of Christendom is with un-regenerated ones; so </li></ul><ul><li>seems the spurious growth and evil therewith) </li></ul>

PARABLE OF THE LEAVEN (Mat.13: 33) </li></ul><ul><li>Similar Lk.13: 20; For Leaven shows evil </li></ul><ul><li>Paul exhorts us to be away of “ malice and wickedness ” </li></ul><ul><li>The Lord warned us to be careful of: </li></ul><ul><li>L. of Pharisees (Mat.16: 6) Hypocrisy </li></ul><ul><li>L. of Sadducees (Mat.16: 6) Unbelief (Acts.23: 8) </li></ul><ul><li>L. of Herod (Mk.8: 15) Religion of Worldliness </li></ul><ul><li>(Gospel is pure cannot spread by itself; Leaven makes </li></ul><ul><li>dough; 1.Cor.5: 7; Gal.5: 9 shows only so bigger) </li></ul>

TREASURE HID IN THE FIELD (Mat.13: 44) </li></ul><ul><li>No similar Parable </li></ul><ul><li>Field is the world (Mat.13: 37) </li></ul><ul><li>Israel is the Hidden treasure (Ex.19: 5; Ps.135: 4) </li></ul><ul><li>Man findeth is Christ (Jn.1: 11) </li></ul><ul><li>Now Israel is like treasure hid in the field, Christ’s death of atonement covers redemption of Israel also; but as a nation </li></ul><ul><li>after the church period only (Rom.11: 1; 26) </li></ul><ul><li>( Ps note:- By giving all one cannot attain salvation; for salvation </li></ul><ul><li>is the free gift, cannot be bought also) </li></ul>

MERCHANTMAN SEEKING GOODLY PEARL </li></ul><ul><li>(Mat.13: 45-46) </li></ul><ul><li>No similar parable </li></ul><ul><li>Merchantman is Christ </li></ul><ul><li>Pearl of great price is the Church </li></ul><ul><li>(Pearl is formed by the suffering of the oyster; Church formed </li></ul><ul><li>as the fruit of Christ’s sufferings. Eph.5: 25) </li></ul><ul><li>(Similar arguments like previous: un-relevant as Salvation can </li></ul><ul><li>not be bought or earned) </li></ul>

THE DRAGNET CAST IN TO THE SEA (Mat.13: 47-50) Dragnet is not the Gospel </li></ul><ul><li>No similar Parable </li></ul><ul><li>How relevant, parable fits to the kingdom of Heaven- ( having </li></ul><ul><li>all kinds of fishes ) </li></ul><ul><li>Bad fishes cannot be in the Kingdom of God </li></ul><ul><li>Time at the end of the world; angels will separate; wicked from among the just and cast bad away in to the hell (v.49-50) </li></ul>

THE PARABLES (HOW TO CONDUCT IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN) <ul><li>THE VINEYARD LABOURERS (Mat.20: 1-16) </li></ul><ul><li>Early morning, Third hour, Sixth hour, Ninth hour, </li></ul><ul><li>Eleventh hour; shows the age a person when called </li></ul><ul><li>A penny a day was promised to the first (v.2) </li></ul><ul><li>“ whatsoever” was promised to the rest all (v.4) </li></ul><ul><li>Good master begins to pay from last to the first (v.8) </li></ul><ul><li>Found paid one penny, others murmured (v.11) </li></ul><ul><li>LESSON: With what motive or attitude one serves ? </li></ul><ul><li>( Serve with gladness - Phil.2: 14; Due.27: 47) </li></ul>
