    • The Facts
        • The U.S. uses 100 million tons of paper a year, over 745 pounds per person!
        • Post consumer fiber can only be recycled 5 to 7 times . We are ultimately dependent on new tree fiber for papermaking!
        • More than 100 million acres of forests have been certified by SmartWood to FSC standards…up from 68 million acres in 2005…a 47% increase !
        • CLASSIC CREST and CLASSIC Linen fine paper brands from Neenah Paper are now FSC Certified! We offer over 870 FSC Certified choices throughout our portfolio of brands.

    • The Facts
        • One ton of recycled paper saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.
        • One ton of paper made with 100% post consumer fiber saves*…
          • 24 trees
          • 22 million BTUs of energy
          • 3,582 lbs CO2 equivalent
          • 10,325 gallons wastewater
          • *Source: www.environmentaldefense.org/papercalculator
        • Today, 70% of Neenah Paper’s portfolio of premium uncoated items contain a minimum of 30% post consumer recycled fiber!

    • The Facts
        • Reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases helps to mitigate the impacts of global warming and climate change.
        • Manufacturers emit greenhouse gases directly through their operations and indirectly through the use of fossil fuels.
        • Only 2% of the energy produced in the United States comes from emission-free, renewable energy sources.
        • Neenah Paper is committed to directly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions!

  • 5. What is Chain of Custody Certification (COC)? COC is a way of tracking paper throughout its life cycle, from the forest to the point of sale. COC is chain of ownership ! For an organization to use the FSC logo on their materials, each part of the chain must be FSC COC certified! What does FSC Certification address? • Social issues: worker safety, training, and communication and conflict resolution with stakeholders. • Environmental issues: aquatic areas, high conservation forests, and threatened and endangered species. • Systems issues: management plans, monitoring, chain of custody and inventory.
  • 6.
    • FSC Recycled – Paper is manufactured from 100% post-consumer reclaimed fiber, supporting the responsible use of forest resources (Label: FSC_RE_1).
    • FSC Mixed Sources – Paper made with FSC Certified virgin fiber and post consumer reclaimed fiber (Label: FSC_MS_1).
    • FSC Mixed Sources – Papers made with FSC Certified virgin fiber and other controlled sources (Label: FSC_MS_3).

    • Using FSC Certified Recycled papers made with post consumer fiber saves trees, energy, water and solid waste! You can measure your savings at:
      • www.environmentaldefense.org/papercalculator
    • Using FSC Certified papers made with virgin fiber…
      • Supports the responsible forest management.
      • Helps to protect vegetation that prevents global warming.
      • Helps to improve the integrity of post consumer waste (PCW). After all, PCW is at one point virgin fiber!
Which choice is right for you?
  • 8. Other Choices: No-New-Tree Papers
    • Sugarcane bagasse pulp
      • A waste product of the sugar refining industry
      • (2 tons of sugar = 1 ton bagasse / waste)
      • Using bagasse avoids land filling /incineration
      • Less energy is required for processing and fewer chemicals for bleaching as compared to virgin pulp
Mesa White, Tortilla and Balanced White in ENVIRONMENT ® Papers are FSC Certified and contain 50% sugar cane bagasse and 50% post consumer fiber.
  • 9. “ Chasing Arrows” Recycled Logo
    • Who owns the chasing-arrows logo?
      • No one! The logo was developed by Gary Anderson in 1970, a 23-year-old art student who created the logo for an environmental contest sponsored by the Container Corp of America, now part of Stone-Smurfit Corporation.
      • Non-regulated, recycled logo
      • The chasing-arrows logo is unprotected. Anyone can use it!
      • The industry ‘standard’ for using the logo signifies that a minimum of 30% post consumer waste has been used in the making of un-coated papers.
An early design of the recycling symbol, sketched on a letter to Gary’s mother.
  • 10. Third-party Certification of Recycled Content
    • Who is Green Seal ?
      • An independent, non-profit organization, founded in 1989, which develops environmental certification standards for products including paper, cleaners, paints…and more!
    • Green Seal provides end-users verification of:
      • 30% post consumer content or greater
      • Mill processes are environmentally preferable,
      • including packaging
More than 70% of all items within Neenah’s fine paper portfolio are Green Seal Certified! Green Seal Certified grades from Neenah Paper include: -CLASSIC Brands -SUNDANCE® Papers -ENVIRONMENT ® Papers -ESSE ® Papers -EAMES ™ Paper Collection -OXFORD ® Papers -HOWARD® Linen Papers -CORONADO® SST Papers Use the Green Seal mark on any certified paper, no chain-of-custody required!
  • 11. What does it mean to be Carbon Neutral ?
    • Calculating your total climate-damaging carbon emissions…
    • Reducing them where possible…
    • Then balancing your remaining emissions by reducing emissions somewhere else in the world. This is called: Carbon Offsetting.
  • 12. What does it mean for YOU to be Carbon Neutral ?
    • Example: www.terra pass .com
    • You can buy carbon offsets from terrapass to offset the emissions associated with driving, flying, your home or an event!
    • “ We all contribute to global warming, every time we fly, drive or turn on a light. terrapass shows you ways to reduce and balance your impact.”
  • 13. How is Neenah Paper Carbon Neutral ?
    • In 2007 Neenah Paper Inc. became a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX®)
      • 2nd largest carbon reduction and trading system in the world.
      • CCX requires third-party certification . Direct and indirect emissions are audited.
      • Members made a legally binding commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • 14. Understanding Our Carbon Footprint What are Direct Emissions? The emissions from onsite energy sources, which result from manufacturing. Sources include natural gas boilers and renewable sources such as green steam! What are Indirect Emissions ? The emissions associated with the electricity purchased by Neenah Paper and generated by our utilities.
  • 15. Reducing our Direct Emissions We have reduced our carbon footprint 66% since 2005! = + +
  • 16. Supporting our local Green-e Utility
  • 17. Reducing Our Footprint: Green-e Certification
    • What is Green-e?
      • Administered by the Center for Resource Solutions
      • Established in 1997. A national non-profit organization.
      • Green-e certifies the majority of Renewable Energy Credit (RECs) sales in the U.S.
      • Green-e is not just a paper industry logo; Green-e Energy is THE national symbol for renewable energy excellence
Green-e Labeling Example Lundberg Family Farms Rice Chips
  • 18. Reducing Our Footprint: Green-e Certification
    • Neenah buys Green-e Certified Renewable Energy from our local utility, Wisconsin Energy Corporation.
    • Why buy locally?
      • We are directly offsetting the production of electricity from fossil fuels
      • We are growing our utility’s renewable energy program for the benefit of other businesses and homes
      • We are directly increasing demand for more renewable resources
      • We are directly improving air quality in our community
  • 19. Reducing our Direct Emissions
    • In addition to purchasing Green-e energy from our local utility, Neenah Paper invests directly in alternative energy sources to help power our operations.
      • Solar Power
      • At Neenah’s mill in Ripon, California, we are using solar power to run our process water treatment operations.
  • 20.
      • Innovative upgrade to the Neenah Mill’s Wastewater Treatment Plant
        • The upgrade reduced energy consumption by 33% annually.
        • The upgrade prevents the release of 2,520,000 lbs of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere annually! This is the equivalent of taking 229 cars off the road for one full year!*
        • Neenah receives 2008 Wisconsin Governor’s Award for Energy Efficiency!
