• Effective microorganisms

    1. 1. Effective microorganisms as a tool for bio entrepreneurship IS THIS SAFE OUR MENU
    2. 2. Why EM?
    3. 3. Basic requirements

EM stock

Sugar source

Clean water

Sugar source may include molasses/Jaggery/ sugar or sugarcane juice or fruit juice or pulp from canning industry.

Clean water means unchlorinated water. If tap water is to be used, please expose it overnight so that chlorine is removed.

    4. 4. The microorganisms in EM
    5. 5. Microorganisms in EM Phototrophic Bacteria Yeast
    6. 6. Lactic Acid Bacteria Lactic acid bacteria
    7. 7. EM-2

The mother culture is activated in order to make it ready to use .

used in many applications like

gardening

agriculture,

animal husbandry and pet care,

household applications,

garbage and sewage applications

The best part of EM is that it is self propagating and can be further

diluted 50 times before use in over 100 applications

    8. 8. EM can be Activated

Water 17 lit

EM 1 lit Molasses 2 lit Ferment in airtight plastic container for seven days. Release gas every day From 1 litre stock 20 litres activated EM can be obtained
    9. 9. Dilution ratios

Dilute EM-2 in clean water 50 times to 100 times depending on the area of application

This means that 1 litre EM-2 can give you 50 litres or 100 litres of microorganisms.

You can make fermented rice wash [EM-3]

by fermenting daily rice wash and use it as a substitute for phenyl or any household use

    10. 10. Cost Effective technology

The dilution ratio : The extended EM is further diluted in water before application depending upon the area of use, thus making the technology cost effective since one can make 20,000 litres of culture from 1 litre of original stock solution

50 times dilution = 2 ml Extended EM in 100ml water

100 times dilution = 1 ml Extended EM in 100 ml water

500 times dilution = 1 ml Extended EM in 500 ml water

1000 times dilution = 1 ml Extended EM in 1000 ml water

    11. 11. Extended EM or EM -2 & it’s multiple uses

After 7 day fermentation process in air tight plastic container,EM-2 is ready to use. No refrigeration is required

Release accumulated gas once in a day.

Shelf life….30 days and up to 60 days if molasses are used as sugar source

Never try to extend EM-2 further.

A white layer on top is a indication of presence of actinomycetes and is pleasant smelling with pH < 4

EM-2 can be used for all other preparations except EM-5 and EM Fish extract

    12. 12. EM-2

The activated culture has a shelf life of 30 days and an be used to make many preparations like EM rice wash, EM-FPE,EM Bokashi I and II,EM extracts for farming .

    13. 13. The technology is cost effective

One litre of EM stock can be diluted to 50-100 liters depending on area of application

    14. 14. The good , bad and the ugly …. …….the three natural processes
    15. 15. The issues…….

SWM [solid Waste Management]

LWM [ Liquid Waste Management ]

EST [ Effluent & sewage treatment ]

Environmental degradation

    16. 16. EM in Housing complexes

EM converts sludge into compost

It reduces SPM (suspended particle matter) in water.

It reduces smell in washrooms and toilets

EM act as an antioxidant and protects plant and machinery from rusting

EM technology thrives on hydrocarbons, sulfides and oxides, which are responsible for depletion of ozone layer.

What is more, it converts these agents of destruction into amino acids, organic oxygen and sugars that fertilize the soil .

    17. 17. EM in Effluent &sewage treatment

With EM application, the running cost of ETP/STP can come down by > 30 %.

It brings down the BOD,COD and TSS in all effluents & sewage.

EM bring down the total & Fecal coliform count to PCB norms .

The pH value is controlled by microorganisms, so that the effluent after being treated carries a pH of around 6.5 to 7.5

EM suppresses foul odor within 15 minutes. Owing to the low pH of EM, all pathogenic microorganisms like e.coli. Salmonella and gas producing microorganisms are eliminated, as they cannot survive pH > 5

EM enhances the capacity of ETP and STP by over 25 % by reducing the retention time.

It suppresses flies and mosquitoes

    18. 18. Activated EM or EM -2 & it’s multiple uses

Release accumulated gas once in a day.

Shelf life….30-45 days

Never try to extend EM-2 further.

A white layer on top is a indication of presence of actinomycetes and is pleasant smelling with pH < 4

EM-2 can be used for 6 other preparations

    19. 19. EM rice wash

Each day every household wash rice before cooking.

The residue or rice wash is a rich source of nutrients and minerals.

Through the drains the rice wash leads to river pollution on one side and loss of natural minerals and nutrients which can be treated with EM to yield EM rice wash

EM rice wash has several applications in our daily life in toilets/bathrooms/ clogged drains/ plant nutrients/ smell removal since the microbes in EM eat away grime, sludge, stains, faul odors.

Every housewife can clean her environment on daily basis.

It finds place in STP also.

    20. 20. EM rice wash Ferment in airtight container for 7 days releasing accumulated gas every day. Add chopped leaves of aromatic plants for good aroma. On 8 th day EM-3 is ready for use. Have this cycle on a daily basis Mix Rice wash 1 lit EM 10-15 ml Sugar/jaggery 10-15 ml
    21. 21.

In case of household garbage, the wet garbage treated in airtight plastic containers with sieve and tap arrangement to drain the garbage juice on daily basis. Each day, handful of EM bokashi and EM rice wash added to the layer and after the container was full, it was allowed to ferment for 15 days under anaerobic conditions and later the contents added to the soil.

    36. 36. EM garbage compost

Wet garbage can be treated at home

2 3 4 5 6 1 7 M T W T F S S week days EM Rice wash or Bokashi EM Garbage juice Rich nutrient plant source Air tight container Contents transferred to a dug trench and Covered with superficial soil for 15 days To yield EM garbage compost
    37. 37. Community garbage recycling

EM can be used as an effective tool to convert the daily garbage from community kitchen into value added

“ EM Garbage compost ” to grow flowers and vegetables in an organic way.

The EM garbage juice obtained is a very rich source of plant nutrient

    38. 38. Community garbage recycling [Phase I]

Left over wet garbage from kitchen is added daily in a drum of adequate capacity depending on the quantity of daily waste

2 5 8 11 14 1 3 4 6 7 9 10 12 13 15 EM-rice wash is then added on these garbage layers daily. The quantity depends on the quantity of garbage. Each day EM- garbage juice is collected from the tap at the Bottom of the drum, diluted & used as liquid nutrient to plants. EM rice Wash + bokashi
    39. 39. garbage compost … Break wet garbage into small pieces for EM to become active Sprinkle handful EM Bokashi 1 and press and cover the container Procedure for household garbage treatment making compost
    40. 40. Community garbage recycling [ Phase II ]

After 15 days of fermentation in anaerobic drums, the contents are transferred and spread in a dug out trench 5-6 inched deep and covered with top soil.

The EM-garbage compost is ready to use in another 15 days time.

The compost thus obtained by EM technology can be used for kitchen gardening, growing od flowers and fruits

    41. 41. Kitchen garbage compost preparation method . Break the garbage into small pieces to help EM become more active. Well drained garbage is mixed with EM Bokashi. First, the EM Bokashi is spread in the bottom of the container before placing garbage. This promotes smooth fermentation. Drain garbage juice solution (liquid fertilizer). The liquid easily spoils so it should be diluted and used within the day.
    42. 42. When garbage occupies 80% of the container, close the lid and keep it in a dark place for about 1-2 weeks.
    43. 43. Plant seed and seedling 2-4 weeks after EM garbage compost application Dig 20-30 cm deep to make ditches to apply over entire area. Apply EM garbage compost. Mix with soil (pour 100x
    44. 44. If EM garbage compost is used as additional fertilizer, add 50 cm from the seed or plant. Mix EM garbage compost with soil. EM garbage compost is turning into the humus. No foul odor. Note Seed or seedling should be soaked into diluted EM solution for 30 minutes before seeding or transplanting. The dilution of EM is 1:1,000. If EM garbage compost is used when planting, add EM garbage compost 30 cm from the plant and cover with soil.
    45. 45. After 14 day fermentation, in air tight container , the contents are transferred to the soil and covered for 15 days to get Zymogenic soils
    46. 46. Nature farming can be a pleasure …. Quality safe food production through EM technology Enjoy the wonder of nature farming with Microrganisms
    47. 47. Application of garbage leachates Garbage juice solution is fermented liquid (also called liquid fertilizer) produced when EM Bokashi is added to kitchen garbage in an airtight container. In the juice, EM tends to feed on many nutrients and thus, becomes active. However, when it is exposed to air, bad bacteria is bred and the quality of the juice is easily changed. Therefore, the juice should be entirely used as soon as possible. Dilution of the garbage juice is 1:1,000. Add EM 100x diluted solution to the garbage juice solution, if it has a foul odor or the odor in the drain worsens when the juice is drained. Kitchen drain Toilet. Sewage. Pond. Spray to flowers and vegetables for good growth.
