  3. 3. Moving photographsIn 1878 photographerEadweard Muybridge was the firstperson to show movement withphotographs (running horses). Watch the video
  4. 4. The kinetoscopeIn 1894 Thomas Edison inventedthe first motion picture camera formaking silent films (kinetoscope)and made the first film ever! Watch the videoIt was the also the first“THE END” in History!!
  5. 5. The first filmsThe first films were silent and black andwhite. Actors made very exageratedmovements or mime and later title cardswere introduced.In big cities an orchestra played somemusic while the audience watched thefilm. Watch the video
  6. 6. The three big comediansStill in black and white and silent,these three comedians made laugha lot of people:• Harold Lloyd (vídeo)• Buster Keaton (vídeo)• Charles Chaplin (vídeo)
  7. 7. The coming of soundThe first commercial sound filmappeared in 1927. It was “The JazzSinger”. Before that, there weresome experiments with sound infilms in the USA. Watch the video
  8. 8. Moving to HollywoodThe film industry was starting andmoved from New York toHollywood (Southern California)because of the weather and theproximity to Mexico.
  9. 9. The first cartoonsWalt Disney created his most famouscartoon character Mickey Mouse in 1928(still in black and white!). Then wouldcome Donald Duck, Pluto, Goofy… Watch the video
  10. 10. The coming of colourTechnicolour appeared in 1916 but wasespecially common from 1922 to 1952. Anexcellent example is “Wizard of Oz”(1930) At first, it was very expensive tomake films in colour. Watch the video
  11. 11. The majorsMajor film studios appeared inHollywood and producedmany films in the Golden Ageof cinema (1930s-1940s) withfamous film stars.
  12. 12. And the Oscar goes to…These internationally famous awards aregiven every year since 1929 by theAcademy of the Motion Picture Arts andSciences. The ceremony takes place inHollywood around February with millionsof spectators around the world. Link to the Academy
  13. 13. Computer animationIn 1995 “Toy Story” wasthe first film completelymade with computeranimation. It used CGI(Computer GeneratedImagery). The companyPixar is responsible forfamous movies with this Watch the trailertechnique.
  14. 14. SFX, SPFX, FXIn the last decades special effects are veryused to create new illusions andpossibilities beyond reality. Digital effectshelped a lot to produce new and specialfilms like “The Matrix” or “Avatar”. Thesedays 3D films offer new sensations. Watch Avatar trailer
  15. 15. People in the movies• Film cast: the actors (sometimesstunts!!) we see in a film• Film crew: many more people are behindthe camera like technicians, producers,directors, screenwriters, casting director,unit managers, production assistants,location managers…
