  6. 6. • Proposals for solving problems take many forms in our culture. Formal written proposals are used often in business, government, and the academic world to present possible solutions to particular problems, like spiraling costs or lower-than-expected revenue. Effectively composed formal proposals exhibit all of the basic features of the proposal essay discussed in this chapter: a well-defined problem, a well-argued solution, an effective counterargument, and a readable plan. • In this chapter, you will write a proposal for a solution to a problem that concerns you. As you compose your proposal, you should consider whether the use of visuals or multimedia would help your readers more immediately or more fully grasp your proposed solution.
