  • 4. Learning Objective: To understand what life in a favela is like. A “Favela” is the word used in Brazil to describe a shanty town.
  • 5. A Shanty Town is a squatter community that springs up in an area that used to have no houses.
  • 6. A Squatter is someone who settles on the land without the legal right to be there.
  • 7. Shanty Towns are also called “Spontaneous Settlements” . It means the place is unplanned.
  • 8. ROCINHA is the biggest favela in Rio De Janeiro.
  • 9. It’s also the biggest in South America!
  • 10. With people living on top of people!
  • 11. Electricity comes from wherever you can get it!
  • 12. And goes wherever it is needed!
  • 13. Around 200,000 people live in Rocinha... WHY?
  • 14. Death Rates in Rocinha are THREE times higher than the rest of Rio. Why?
  • 15. What questions can we ask the people here about living in Rocinha?
  • 16. What kind of work will they do in the future?
  • 17. Can people enjoy living in Rocinha?
  • 18. Can tourism be the answer?
