  • Extended Essay
    • The extended essay is a requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they are studying.
  • Theory of Knowledge (ToK)
    • Theory of knowledge is a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical)
  • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)
    • Creativity, action, service requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom. Students can combine all three components or do activities related to each one of them separately.
  • Two Levels: Higher & Standard
    • Students must take at least three and not more than four subjects at higher level and the others at standard level.
    • Recommended teaching time:
            • 240 hours to complete higher level courses
            • (= 4 hours per week in grades 11 and 12)
            • 150 hours to complete standard level courses.
            • ( = 2.5 hours per week in grades 11 and 12)
  • IB Grades
    • External Examinations in the Six Subject Areas:
      • 1 – 7 x 6 subjects = 42 possible points
      • 3 additional points
      • Possible from ToK & EE = 3 bonus points
      • Top Score = 45 points
      • Minimum Passing Score = 24 points*
      • *Students who fall below 24 points can earn separate certificates and/or attempt to pass by resitting exams (until the age of 20).
  • Assessment
    • Diploma Program assessment procedures measure the extent to which students have mastered advanced academic skills in fulfilling these goals, for example:
      • analyzing and presenting information
      • evaluating and constructing arguments
      • solving problems creatively

    • Basic skills are also assessed, including:
    • retaining knowledge
    • understanding key concepts
    • applying standard methods.

    • In addition to academic skills, Diploma Program assessment encourages an international outlook and intercultural skills where appropriate.

  • Internal assessment
    • In nearly all subjects at least some of the assessment is carried out internally by teachers, who mark individual pieces of work produced as part of a course of study. Examples include oral exercises in language subjects, projects, student portfolios, class presentations, practical laboratory work, mathematical investigations and artistic performances.
  • External assessment
    • Some assessment tasks are conducted and overseen by teachers without the restrictions of examination conditions, but are then marked externally by examiners. Examples include world literature assignments for language A1, written tasks for language A2, essays for theory of knowledge and extended essays.
    • Because of the greater degree of objectivity and reliability provided by the standard examination environment, externally marked examinations form the greatest share of the assessment for each subject.
