  • CHEMISTRY 3.5 ANSWERSWORKSHEET FOUR ORGANIC Alcohols continued1. The reaction product is a haloalkanes which is insoluble in the mixture and so forms a cloud of tiny droplets.2. Acidified permanganate (or acidified dichromate) aldehydes carboxylic acids ketones Tertiary3. No Product CH3COCH3 (propanone) CH3CH2COCH3 (butan-2-one) CH3CH2CH2CHO (butanal) No Product CH3COCH2CH2CH2CH3 (hexan-2-one) CH3CH2CH2COOH (butanoic acid)4. In order to oxidise a tertiary alcohol a carbon-carbon bond would have to be broken and this does not take place.5. (a) A milder oxidising agent is used, such as acidified dichromate, and the aldehyde is distilled off as soon as it is made. (b) In order to make a carboxylic acid, the reaction is done under reflux so the aldehyde can be further oxidised.6. (a) CH3CH=CH2 (b) CH3CH2CH2Cl (c) Conc H2SO4 (d) PCl5 / PCl3 / HCl, ZnCl2 (e) CH3CH2CHO (f) H+/Cr2O72-
