But here’s the thing... Today’s massive successes will often look quaint tomorrow. What was BIG becomes baseline.

What is scale? Scaling? •# of users? •# of employees? •$$ revenue? •$$ proﬁt? •impact in the world? •combination of all these things? others?

Our grasp of scale isn’t always very good... NPR listener audience is ~30M 90M users in 7 years - 25% bigger than nightly news - built over 40 years 200M users in 5 years 400M users in 7 years 100M people will watch the game - about the same as American Idol - in its 45th year 600M users in 7 years 100M users in 60 days Unprecedented? (yes) Will it be unique? (no)

Everything’s changed. Why? Web + Facebook + App Store means ubiquity, low friction transactions, impulse purchases

Scaling challenges are changing signiﬁcantly Old challenges: access to users, distribution New challenges: getting above the noise, maturing processes & organization, being global (multi-local) from Day 1
