Intro To Podcasts - Presentation Transcript

  2. What exactly is a “ podcast ”?
    • iPod + broadcast = Podcast
    • “ A podcast is a digital media file, or a related collection of such files, which is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers.”

  3. So really, what exactly is a “ podcast ”?
    • What makes a podcast different from multimedia on the web?
      • Multimedia on the web + syndication
      • Podcasts are automatically delivered to subscribers via a syndication process
      • Subscribers can then listen or view the podcast at their convenience.
  4. Create a podcast in 3 easy steps
        • Step 1 – Create the podcast content
        • Step 2 – Upload the podcast content file
        • Step 3 – Create & Upload the RSS Feed file
  5. Step 1 – Create the podcast content
    • Capture (record) the content
    • Edit and save the content as audio/video file
      • Audio should be saved in MP3 format
      • Video should be saved in either mpeg or avi format
  6. Step 2 – Upload the podcast content file
    • File Transfer Protocol software
    • Other things you need to have/know
      • A web storage space
      • Specification of the web storage space
        • Web space address (http://members.shaw.ca/yourusername)
        • Server address (ftp.shaw.ca)
  7. Step 2 – Upload the podcast content file
    • Ensure you know the address of the podcast content file on the web space (http://members.shaw.ca/mavisleung/podcast/audio01.mp3)
  8. What is RSS?
    • RSS = R eally S imple S yndication
    • RSS is a “web feed format used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts.”
  9. Each podcast “episode” becomes a new <item> in the RSS feed. The <enclosure> tag points to the location of the new file.
  10. Step 3 – Create & Upload the RSS Feed file
    • RSS Feed Generator
    • Other things you need to have/know
      • Specification of the web storage space
        • Web space address (http://members.shaw.ca/yourusername)
        • Server address (ftp.shaw.ca)
        • The address of the podcast content file you uploaded onto the web space in Step 3 ( http://members.shaw.ca/mavisleung/podcast/audio01.mp3 )
    • Repeat of Step 2
    • Ensure you know the address of the RSS file on the web space (http://members.shaw.ca/mavisleung/rss/audio01.rss)
  11. Aggregator
    • Subscribers use an Aggregator to subscribe to podcast:
      • iTunes
      • Bloglines
      • iGoogle
      • iPodder
      • Juice
