NHS FOREST <ul><li>The NHS Forest, coordinated by the Campaign for Greener Healthcare, inspires healthcare organisations and local communities to make the link between health and the environment by </li></ul><ul><li>Improving people’s health through green space </li></ul><ul><li>Reducing the NHS’ carbon footprint </li></ul><ul><li>Creating a positive, physical opening for discussions on wider sustainability (– our Green Trojan Horse!) </li></ul>

Benefits and savings <ul><li>How does your innovation reduce carbon emissions? </li></ul><ul><li>Healing environments: Patients recuperate quicker; staff and community stay healthier </li></ul><ul><li>1.3 million trees will cut the NHS’ carbon footprint </li></ul><ul><li>The project can engage people with carbon reduction ideas – </li></ul><ul><li>eg green routes -> green travel </li></ul><ul><li>What are the social and </li></ul><ul><li>financial benefits? </li></ul><ul><li>Improves wellbeing for patients, staff and local community </li></ul><ul><li>Encourages other greening initiatives – eg cycle paths, easy pedestrian access, Green Gym </li></ul><ul><li>Local jobs and volunteer groups created </li></ul>

Measures of success <ul><li>Early days but… </li></ul><ul><li>2000 trees already in the ground at 20 sites (varies from 1 – 800 trees) with plans for 50 sites this year </li></ul><ul><li>Over 30 partners engaged in national project with delivery agreements in place </li></ul><ul><li>Positive feedback from partners (“our nicest project”, “easy to sell”) </li></ul><ul><li>and from community participants in planting days… </li></ul><ul><li>‘ The children had a fantastic time and want to do it every week.’ </li></ul><ul><li>Year 3 Teacher </li></ul><ul><li>‘ Thank you very much for inviting us to go to Airedale Hospital to plant trees to make a forest for the environment … I had a brilliant time’ </li></ul><ul><li>Pupil at Eastburn Primary School </li></ul>
